Mechanical fuel pump

So,

When I park the EB on a slope (ass down in this case) the fuel pump will not pull enough fuel to fill the carb.

If I fill the bowl manually, it will start and continue to run.

When it is on flat ground it runs fine and I am wondering if the angle from the tank to the pump input is an issue with an old pump (installed in 92).

Is one of the failure modes on a mechanical fuel pump to not pull fuel and only pump?

If the diaphragm is starting to tear, it could be good enough to push but not to pull.

I'd pull the pump, press the lever down, stick my thumb over the intake port, & see if it leaks vacuum.

If there is a hole in the input line to the fuel pump it will act like that too.

Also, a torn diaphragm on some types of mechanical fuel pumps can send fuel into your crankcase and piss in your Cheerios.

I'd rip that mu'fugger out & eyeball it sooner rather than later.
