Wonder what happened. from a nerd standpoint, hacked, ransomware, hardware outage? rat chewed the wires?

Even our little podunk county has completely separate trunks for backup 911 service.
You’d have to blow the whole building up to stop service and even then we have work share agreements with neighboring counties to take over in case of catastrophic damage.

Somebody done screwed the pooch planning the disaster preparedness.

More than likely something to do with a UPS swap out. We are seeing alot of emergency services upgrading this year. Most of them don't have an Internal IT guy.

yup. waiting to see the fallout. I know we won't get the whole story. There was a municipality here in NJ who got hit with ransomeware. Billing system was trashed. They had no way to see what you owed. Never hit the news.

I know of a small utility contractor that took out a somewhat large suburb of Dallas' 911 system for over a week with a direction a drill. It was not a cheap lesson for them to learn.

911 outages are a different story. They're FCC reportable so it'll be public information. If it's not something as simple as 1/4 mile of stolen cable being found in the back of a clapped out Subaru, it'll make the news.

I can't even fathom the price tag that was put on that screw up!

Dueling alerts. :lmao:

Ours goes out ever few months it seems.
Not that it's that good when it's working anyhow.
They made us go from 7 digit phone numbers to 10 not long ago, claiming it was for 911.

I called in an impaired driver a couple weeks ago, after like 78 questions, many multiple times and demanding I drive to the station to fill out a report i told them have a good day and hung up.

Agreed, similar setup here for 911. Separate trunks and backup systems/software. And worst case everything goes down Austin 911 calls get sent to San Antonio 911 who has the ability to dispatch Austin units and vice versa. I don’t understand how you can have a statewide 911 outage.

Somewhere along the line someone thought it would be a great idea to put everybody on a single system instead of letting each municipality handle their own shit. And when that one system goes down, everybody goes down. :shaking:
