Seller lists an item on marketplace
Potential buyer sends seller a message
Seller responds directing potential buyer to an email address

That’s about where it ends.

I’m looking for a compact travel trailer and have responded to 2 ads that have played out like this.

Email harvesting?

One they have your email they'll try and get you to do some form of payment, then say it didn't work then ask you for the otp they just sent to your email to help you finish the transaction, then use that on an actual account.
Makes sense, but they actually need to respond to the emails for it to work. I emailed from the first ad I came across with this MO yesterday. No response. Saw a similar trailer advertised this morning. Sellers response was almost identical to the first. That set off the red flags for me.

After browsing marketplace this morning it looks like most of the ads are scams.

It's pretty easy to weed out the scams. And there are a ton of them.

If it's too good to be true, it is.

Looks at the other stuff the seller has listed. If they have the same high ticket item listed in dozens of cities all over the country, it's a scam.

If they're in your city but only offering shipping, it's a scam.

If they immediately ask for your number or e-mail, it's a scam.

If they use the word "kindly", it's a scam.

Kindly do the needful please

How to spot someone who's certainly been scammed before #101list

unless it's airpods at 1/2 off. then there's no reason to think it's a scam...

Dispite all the claims on here of wonderous bargains to be had, I have never seen any
Though i found a $900 snapon tool for $96. In sacramento so worth the trip.

I second guess it and click the profile, lots of tools, all 90-100$, all in sac. Profile says some where in washington. Oh, well damn.

I was searching for some take off mirrors to swap out mine. Why does lashauwnda have a set of gm mirrors? Why does xi quen have a set of the same pics of mirrors for the same price?

Last time I bought something off facebook I paid a 10 year old for trailer tires. Yah my kid is home, just pay him. Its a shit show.

I've done that too. Sometimes it's been wife or kid of someone that "doesn't do that damn internets" though.

Wut? No reason? I'd say 70-80% of the time if something's listed well below average market price, it's going to be a a scam. Of course there are exceptions and you can still get good deals, but there are way more scammers on FB that you're giving credit for.

The one I see is "encumbrances"

Every scam car or truck or trailer ad has some line about "the vehicle has no encumbrances"

was just sarcam about the poster here who complained about getting fake ear buds....

If your trying to sell something and there is a almost immediate response to buy the item without any haggling, and asking for a phone number, SCAM.

It’s no different then dealing on cl really, just know when it’s a scammer or not. Pretty much most all of it is easy to figure out.

There are good deals to be had on there and I’ve sold and bought a bunch of stuff off of fb mp for several years. It’s changed in the last year or two with spam ads tho. I like it as you can check the seller profile for the most part and use that to help decide moving forward with checking the item out better.

I had one guy on CI sell me a T-case for $75. He said give it to his wife. I have to remove it from theBronco. I get there and nobody is home. I remove the case and load it in my truck. Right then she gets home. I give her a $100 bill and she doesn’t have change. She says I have to go to the gas station up the road and get change. (I did)

One guy tripped out when I called him and asked for him by name.
Because only his CL ad has his number and no name while his FB ad had his name but no number.
I saw both ads, so there you go. Pretty funny how he was all "who's this" about it.

But yeah, it's nice to check people out before responding to them, so I like FB for that.

On CL I have found if they put an email usually g.mail across the bottom of the picture it is a scam. I got to wondering on the deal for a Ford Rangher crew cab that was too cheap, copied the discription and googled it and the same add came up in several other states

Very good write up on the scams on the grownup :lmao::lmao::lmao: forum I also frequent. The admin is constantly yelling at patrons of his classifieds to always speak to person on the phone. Dont pass go if no answer or no talk-talk. Also, always get a right now pic of the item and of the seller or buyer in the pic. Or any other reasonable way to document the person AND the item exist. Method of payment is another book to read.

There was something a while ago about ther scammer responding having you verify you are and actual person by them emailing you a google link and send them the 6 digit code.
