Marines lose amphibious assault vehicle

Read about that earlier today. Seems they have suspended search and rescue.
8 families are forever changed, RIP.

And we were just talking about these floating tanks here the other day when the USS Bonhomme Richard was on fire.

Rest in peace brave souls. You had the courage to do what I did not.

It will be interesting to see what happened. Hatch not secured is what I am guessing.

My dads Battalion had a 113 amphibious training go bad when we were in Germany. It overturned in a river and they lost people. IIRC it got swamped because the top hatch was open.

The Marines released their names,
Lance Cpl. Guillermo S. Perez, 20, of New Braunfels, Texas, the presumed dead include, Pfc. Bryan J. Baltierra, 19, of Corona, Calif., a rifleman; Lance Cpl. Marco A. Barranco, 21, of Montebello, Calif., a rifleman; Pfc. Evan A. Bath, 19, of Oak Creek, Wis., a rifleman; U.S. Navy Hospitalman Christopher Gnem, 22, of Stockton, Calif., a hospital corpsman; Pfc. Jack Ryan Ostrovsky, 21, of Bend, Ore., a rifleman; Cpl. Wesley A. Rodd, 23, of Harris, Texas, a rifleman; Lance Cpl. Chase D. Sweetwood, 19, of Portland, Ore., a rifleman; Cpl. Cesar A. Villanueva, 21, of Riverside, Calif., a rifleman

That AAV is old and obsolete. The replacement for it was canceled about 10 years ago as a result of budget cuts.

It is really just a tarted up LVT-1.

When was the last time we used this strategy in combat? Mass invasion from Sea going vessels? With cruise and hypersonic missile tech the way it going most coastal Naval action puts the Ships in serious peril while disgorging their payload.

What is amazing to me is that the military knew exactly where they were and when and still never found that many people. it really sucks.

07 - salute to the fallen

The Marines are going back to this type of warfare so we may see some updates.

They are de-comming ALL of their M1s and the first unit de-coms just finished last week.
Reducing the size of their F-35 squadrons
Reducing artillery pieces
Emphasizing island-hopping

This will be a return to a Marine Corps which will fill the 'traditional' role our generation envisions, of Marines assaulting islands in the Pacific instead of conducting heavy-formation maneuvers in the desert.

For obvious reasons (bat soup)

As far as the Navy and missile-swarms are concerned, the USN is positioning itself toward swarm defense and back-burnered the Railgun and Zumwalt 155mm bombardment role in favor of Lasers, ESSM, RAM upgrades to CIWs, etc.

Both forces are pretty on the ball about this.

It's a little bit more than that. Hell, they've been trying to replace it for over twenty years.

1991, as near as I remember. The mere threat of a Marine amphibious landing (a BLT, and/or one division?) tied up five or six Iraqi divisions in order to secure Kuwait. So that was kinda fucking cool.

Well, ok, an oversized LVT-1 that is in need of a replacement. :flipoff2:

I see the value in options. Especially if it forces the enemy to deal with the potential use. It will be really interesting to see the Marines refocus if what ENoob posted happens. The drones are a game changer with their no loss of pilot risk.
