Many years ago I bought a HF manual tire machine and turned it into a pretzel within a couple of hours. I used to have a guy locally that would mount tires for about 5 bucks per wheel but that price has pretty much gone up x5 and the Mexican places that are still open have got really costly also. I now have literally 20 or more tire switcharoos that I have to do. By the curse of CL I dragged this home for 35 bucks with a few tools. In other machines the collar that holds the tire down was threaded on the shaft, this one is smooth. the collar that came with this one is too small for 8 lug tires. I am thinking I can weld on extensions to widen the collar but still don't know what will hold it down. Thinking about buying a shaft collar to clamp it down. Pics to follow from phone.

Is anyone still using this old junk? Any tips and tricks?

My dad has one but its been 15 years since I saw it. I used it a lot in highschool. It seems like it had a few size disc or tapers for different size wheel holes. It was an old Coats. I dont know why you couldnt build something that would go under what you already have.

that centering collar probably just cocks on the spindle when you apply force, locking it on the shaft

on the subject of bead breakers,
my grandpa welded one together, got it around here somewhere
basically just a piece of angle iron bolted to the door frame with a bunch of different height holes in one leg
then a lever arm with a curved shoe hinged to it to press on the side of the tire
lever arm accepted 1.25" iron pipe for leverage

never tried it, always had access to a proper tire machine
something I've wanted to try for breaking beads is a bare wheel mounted up front, position the tire underneath it and release the jack to pop the bead over the safety bead

Under that center piece ...coming up thru the slot in the table .. There should be a hooked rod connected to a ratcheting footpedal .. The rod hooks on the rim and holds it down.
