I will preface by saying I’m fairly dumb, but I usually get by.

Anyways, machining and re-drilling my 14 bolt hubs for 6.x5.5 pattern. Conflicting holes, I tried to get away with not filling, probably would have been fine if not using a 43/64th bit for the 5/8 wheel studs. Hubs are cast, they drill like butter in the Bridgeport, so I need to fill 4 holes. TIG them up with silicon bronze filler.

So now just the edge of where my bolt holes go has turned into undrilliium. Didn’t realize this shit was so damn hard, it beat up a carbide insert on the lathe too getting them cleaned up.

So, what’s the trick to get some 43/64th holes in this shit? Carbide end mill and high speed? Throw it in the trash and find a new hobby?

This one is really fucked now because the filler blobbed over into the holes I already drilled.

Endmill. Move it back and forth to get the diameter kinda close after your through. Then run the drill through it real slowly to make it roundish.

I alway lay out the pattern first. Then weld in the plugs staying away from where the new holes will be.

oof
use nickel stick rod next time, the 55% stuff

Resharpen the drill and run it really slow, like 5 sfm if you can

drill a pilot hole the size of the drill's web, no larger

Awe bummer.

You can buy pre drilled 6x5.5 hubs for them.

The Solid hubs for whatever reason narrow the whole assembly 2.25” so says their site. The whole reason I horsed around with machining and redrilling them myself is my van rear matches the front width.

Just tack the stud so it doesn't spin. A crack there doesn't matter.

I’m half tempted to snag another set of hubs, spin them down, fill with not silicon bronze and re-drill just because my flavor of autism makes it so I hate being defeated.

can really see the trouble in that picture, how you've got a lot of melted base metal mixed in
it's the same trouble I always have trying to tig braze, I get better results with the oxy/propane torch

My mistake was mig filling holes in cast iron knuckles to reverse the tapers. The welding pulls carbon out of the iron and turns mild steel into undrillium. They were still undrilled when they went into the scrap bin after far too many hours of fucking with them.
