I have been spending more time in the woods with my son. Taking him out on short hikes and if the weather holds this weekend, going to go squirrel hunt for a few hours. There are black bears and cougars around. Seen piles of bear crap here and there, so they are active.

I carry bear spray but also the 1911 condition 1 with 220gr ball ammo. Until I round up the cash for a 44 mag, the Kimber will be on my hip. If I can find the projectiles I would prefer to hand load my own (I have brass primed and ready to load).

Any particulars I should look for? Round nose? Flat nose? Any particular brand I should look for? I am planning to load them up a bit hot. Kimbers are rated for +P loads, but 'not a steady diet' of them. Should I think about a heavier recoil spring as well?

My .02
First, develop the load, then call Kimber for tuning instructions.
Second
Carry lotza spare mags:flipoff2:

Where in CA do you need bear spray plus artillary to go on a hike?

I like one load for everything.

I would run a RNFP or just some good 'ol 200gr SWC's with a warm but nothing crazy powder charge.

Tuolumne National Forest. I carry the 1911 up there for 2 legged creatures as well as quadrapeds. If I was carrying 'artillary' it would be a full tube of 00 buckshot. We are going on a squirrel hunt with a pellet gun and that certainly is not going to stop a bear

Well the guides in Ak. Seem to like big wheelguns. Then there is the 9mm stories...

Penetration on bear sounds great ( hardcast), but in town on tweakers, Umm not so much.
Can't see the w.c. target rounds being a manstopper.

Ok time for peanut gallery to school me on starwars pew bullets :flipoff2:

Lot bigger shit up there though:laughing: Seems like alot of folks running 10mm too.

As much as I like my 44's, I can get a semi on target and multiple shots off a hell of a lot faster

I've often wondered why the big bore magnum offerings doesn't work out for the semiauto's

Rimmed case makes for a big fucking grip on a semi. But theres plenty of desert eagles and coonan's out there

Well
Yea
I was talking about 454 cassul and 50 smith type of thing
Hell even the grizzly, in 45 automag was a fun one to shoot

I had a grizzly 1911 in 45 automag
It were Ginormous
You didn't have to hit the bag guy with yer purse when ya ran out. Just throw it at him:flipoff2:

Y’all are over thinking this. Black bears are over grown puppies. Yell at them, they’ll run 99% of the time. That damn cat will stalk and eat your ass for a snack.

The 45 with a good HP in the chamber and a mag of FMJ. Is plenty. Here, just north of the Smokies I only carry a 357 snuby in the woods.

LOL no.

While I know it works well poking a hole in some lungs of something thats treed. That aint the round I want to save my ass either:laughing:

Agreed. thats why the obvious answer to the OP's question in 9mm:laughing:
Shockingly, it works.
There was a write up on ammoland a few weeks ago about 9 being the most common in bear attacks.
I put it down to, it’s what they had handy.

Everybody has a couple of 9mm's handy. Cheapest thing out there to shoot, yet can get 147gr hardcast for it as well, an they hold a bunch:laughing:. I shoot my 45's and 44's but no where near as much as I do the 9's

I would grab a gun first every time.... That said a guy can post up an article supporting his thoughts and feelings about ANYTHING these days.
