I don't know if there is a "go to swap" for these. Toasty has done a few 2.4 swaps out of the Mighty Max, others have done the 4.3 out of S-10/Blazer (drivers drop transfer case) . I'm doing a 4.3 4l60E, NWF doubler and a Bronco Dana 20 T case in a 4 door first Gen with solid axles. You'll need a 2" body lift to clear the transmission. Using the 4.3 isn't so much about it being a go to for the Montero as it is the go to swap for a lot of vehicles so the after market support is bigger then doing another Mitsubishi power plant swap. I think its 4x4wire that has some good write ups on the 4.3 swap. If I hadn't already had the 4.3 I think A VW IDI would make a cool swap.
