I have several irwin plastic clamps that I use a TON for clamping inwards, and for spreading outwards, but they only go to about 3 feet or so.

Any suggestion for spreader clamps that will go to around 5 feet or so? Quite often I've needed just another foot or so.

I'm thinking bar/pipe clamps that can be used on any length of pipe. Seems like that would be handy, do they work well? It LOOKS like you can use this as a spreading clamp, since the twist handle can slide, and move past the pipe. hard to tell for sure though.

Why not pin the clamps to new pieces of longer bar? IIRC they're 1" x 1/4

I made a pair of these out of some scraps a few years ago and cut/weld to them all the time to push/spread things.

also have an Irwin pipe clamp that should be able to be modified easy enough to use it as a pusher.

the style you have pictured would work if you can un-pin the screw and turn the “nut” around backwards

the orange pony brand clamps I've got are threaded both ends of the clampy bit

ETA: for more force, toss a pipe over the beam on your hilift, keeps the lift all coaxial and shit

Gonna add that one to my bag of tricks.

BTW you could probably be a top contributor to farmshow.

for what I'm usually doing, a hilift is just to heavy and awkward to use

Those work great for fab work. You can tac weld the flats to what ever your job is to help keep it from slipping if needed. I’ve used the fawk out of them.

Heh... I essentially did that with a couple pieces of angle iron welded into a rectangle that slip fits over the Hi-lift beam. Then I added a nice foot to it and gusseted the corners for beefiness. I made mine for spreading fence corners apart so I could replace missing cross supports in old fence corners that were otherwise in good shape still.

shit's useful
the old bumper jacks that look sorta like hilifts but with a bunch of ratchet teeth on one side of the I beam do give you a little finer adjustment than the hilift, and they fit off the shelf square tube perfectly
you just aren't going to find them in the junkyard any more

I have 2 of those in the shop. Very handy. I modified one of them. I cut the hook off and cut in a short angle iron with a slight angle inward. Works great.

Yep similar to mine. I dont have any idea of the brand. They were dads and been in the garage since the 70s. They arent threaded but have a bolt through the clamp and pipe. You can switch em around and use em as spreaders.

look on izzy swans you tube channel. I needed a few more and made some out of wood. Wouldnt take much to make some out of steel flat stock.
