good morning all

what are some ideas for locking my shop door to prevent crack heads from breaking in, it is a hollow steel door and even locking the lock provides almost no security. it swings in so a strong kick i am sure a person could get in.

i was thinking of some of drop dar or hasp and lock but what are some other ideas.

i am out in the country off a gravel road and have good neighbors. however anything is possible. here is a pick of the front of my shop for reference.

if people want to get in, they will get in. you have wood stacked to help them get in the window, the sides of most steel buildings are a cordless grinder/multi-tool away from being a door.

i think converting to a swing out and getting a solid door would be the best solution for keeping the door secure

When you have windows, why try?

My garage has no windows and you ain’t kicking the door in. But the cordless grinder is a real threat. At that point, it’s cameras and dogs.

you got good points, window do add nothing of security at all. the inside is finished so cutting through the steel only gets the extreir wall, then they need to got through the 2x4s and plywood.
converting the swing would be idea, sometimes the simple solution is over looked. lol lol

How about bars on the windows first?

Edit, outside swing leaves the hinges vernable. Just upgrade the door.

upgrading door is cool but what are options to keep door jam from being kicked in, or just a solid dead bolt into a metal jam will keep most people honest, hmmm...

Make sure your homeowner's insurance is up to date, keep the obvious visible goodies out of sight, and add cameras.

Other than that you will need to upgrade every man door and roll door, add bars to the windows, and reinforce the structure itself to help prevent entry. A nice door does nothing when there is glass next to it or a sheetmetal building that can be popped apart with a pry bar.

Curious why a steal door only has 2 hinges. Almost always see 3, I think?

I've always wondered if it would work to use 1/8" plate around the door. Make sure the deadbolt connects into the plate, of course. I'm sure there's a reason why it isn't common but it still makes me wonder.

i have never noticed about the hinges, hahahah funny what you think is normal if thats all you see. hahaha

this use to be a barn and the previous owner would raise one or two cows in there, so security was never a issue, fast forward 7 years, now i have a lift, electricity, shit pile of tools, welders and such i think i need to look into security.

This is the reason why my shop has no windows
I'd get rid of them

If there isn't anything in there they can see, the need to take it will be less

real threat is a 1/4" socket

just pull a sheet off of the side and walk in

you will only keep the honest people out anyway :grinpimp:

Weld up a security door to go outside of the existing. Could do bars or just a solid plate, or combo. Hinges lag into building and covered. For lock use a covered round type padlock.

Bar the windows too. If you have a fab shop around ask if they have any skeletons from burning out parts. They can be perfect security covers.

Security is in layers. Visible, working cameras, monitored audible alarm, security lights and good insurance.
Most thieves will bail when the audible goes off.

The bar is a good design but should be on a door that opens out and the bar should be on the inside made of steel not a 2x4.

How about something like this with a couple tubes bolted through the door that the bar can also slide in to?

Stop over thinking.

Step one.... finish out the stacks of fire wood to cover the entire side including the door and windows.

Step two.... saw and screw several logs together to form a door that when shut retains the look of the stacked fire wood.

Step three... repeat Step two for the windows so you can open them for light.

Now drink beer cause no one can figure out how to enter the damn barn.

You will need to replace the stack eventually so it all seasons evenly.

:smokin:

Also to further camouflage your existing door. Install another fake door on the side and anchor/weld completely shut with a concrete walkway. They will focus their efforts on the door they know about VS the one they don't.

Had someone do that at a place I worked. The 40 year old 8" thick spray foam slowed them long enough for the owner and cops to arrive.

I worked at a facility that was just a big pole building, it had to be 500+ feet long, had ramps for elevation changes, even turned 90* at one point and continued on and on from there
millions and millions of dollars of machinery in there
1/4" socket and you had the key

A door to the back side of a pallet rack that is only one misplaced power steering pump away from being an avalanche of car parts. :lmao:
