I had a (legal) worked from Mexico who got one of those calls. Except it was legit. Wired the money and his daughter in Mexico had a cool story about involuntarily hanging out with the cartel for a day.

My dad’s business partner grew up in Mexico and owns a house in the little town he grew up. He is known as the “rich American” even through he is not rich. Anyways about 10 years ago he was in Mexico for the week of Thanksgiving and then flew back on a Saturday. His sister who still lives in the town in Mexico went to check on his cows the morning he flew out. A random truck was on the property. They kidnapped his sister. Wanted $50k or something. We think they were looking for my dad’s business partner but got his sister instead.

Well they hired some ex military mercenaries from Monterrey to do the exchange. They negotiated a $10k down payment while they got the rest of the money. When the mercenaries went to make the exchange there was a few bang bang bangs that happened. All the bad guys ended up dead. Guns kill people, remember? No mercenaries hurt and sister returned safely. It was believed the kidnappers were just some low level criminals not cartel or anything. No issues or retaliation since the “mishap”.
