Little KEI Trucks

<snip>
You can’t register them in California.

<snip
I'll bite. What prevents them from being registered in Calif if one gets a clean titled one from another state? I've heard 25 and 30 years as being the cut off before things get extra hairy.

I found this while looking for something else:

I talked with another guy who did a direct import into Calif a few years ago on an older Cruiser(diesel) and he said a clean title was the biggest issue.

Emissions will be the biggest issue in that case. No smog shop would touch it and the referee would likely tell you to go away.

And that’s assuming the DMV even lets you get that far. I was told something in the VIN prevented it.

The remaining owners... Will they say "Hey Fcuk You, Man"? Perhaps break out the guns & ammo-
In GA some people started getting notices their registration was canceled.

Stupid is the DMV will blame this on the hood rats in Atlanta putting ATVs and dirt bikes on the road and doing hood rat shit. If that was really the issue wouldn't there be a better method than canceling registration of people who did it legally?

Nanny state BS. Like my samurai is safer than a Kei truck?

I’d love to have the bed off of one to turn my Sammy into a truck though. Where do I get one of the beds for cheap?

Can’t register them in OR either…WA you still can. There’s one running around my town with his cancelled registration, must have just said fuck it and takes his chances.

I remember the Kei trucks were popular in MT like 10-12 years ago during the Obama gas price years

"Revoking registration" has me second guessing building a fummins truck versus restoring the dodge the engine came in:homer:

It would suck to build a 1979 truck to last 25 years and have the 2030 gestapo pull my tags because they changed the rules... whereas the "stock" 1995 truck gets a pass

Is that will happen to our old big block gasser one tons? They’ll just revoke the registration because we end up able to keep to many of them on the road for forever.

I’ve got a daihatsu. 4wd with low range, 5speed tranny. Hydraulic tilt bed with hinged sides. Is great for picking rocks. Put it in 1L and it crawls. Walk beside it and toss rocks in.
I’ve had it over the scales with 800lbs of rock in it. It will do 55 mph max, but will do like 54loaded. Just takes a loooooong time to get there.
I’m 5’10” and I fit, more or less. Big feet little pedals are an issue, but you get used to it.

Handier than the Kawasaki mule I replaced with it. Needs a pipe rack to be handy going to the hardware store or getting steel.

But I’d still sell it in a hot minute for the right price. Titled in MT no problem.
I think the Daihatsu are the ones my cousin in law gets from an importer and fixes up and sells. He's had a few 'extended can't versions and they were surprisingly roomy. We could both fit relatively comfortable in them for a short trip. He lifts them and puts ATV tires on and flips them.

Looks like he's into any of them with 4wd and diff locks but mostly the Daihatsu

They can't just de-value millions and millions of dollars like that without creating a giant opportunity for other states to rake in $$$ by providing registrations.

How recently? SXS can be registered and driven on county roads.

They "don't meet federal safety standards", but it's okay to risk riding a motorcycle? That's a funny one.

Also, never fucking understood grandfathering with a clause prohibiting resale. So your neighbor who's a shitty driver can own one, but you can't buy it off him. :shaking:

It doesn’t have to make sense. You just have to obey

The grandfather clause is there because they know people are short sighted and that such a clause will get most of the people who would've caused a problem to be quiet.

My concern is more along the lines of I can currently swap a 90s diesel into a 70s truck in my state with zero bullshit. I did my first round of emissions testing in my 75 f250, ready for a fight.
I pull into the diesel emissions lane clattering away.
The guy asks "gas or diesel? "
Diesel
"6 or 8?"

6.

Pull forward. Put me on the rollers, had me hold it at 35mph to test for opacity at cruise speed and that was it.

My thought is that I'll do this swap the way in really want, and the feds will put California type rules on old builds and no grandfathering. I'm concerned enough I've seriously considered restomodding the dodge my cummins currently sits in. I believe the non commercial trucks that exist with the engine they came with will be untouched until the fuel costs just get to where they are undriveable.

I don't think your c350 will be fucked with, but I could see you having serious problems swapping that 08 of yours now, getting a couple years out of it, then having to deal with a whole new set of laws and inspections on your state

Those sorts of energy costs would collapse our economy. Not worth planning for because you'll just become a loot drop.

Civil war did it.

It’ll be a federal emission standard.

Civil war did it.
And it caused a civil war before they even put ink to paper and took them a 5yr war to enforce it.

And that was on a single far more ideologically meaningful issue to people than old trucks.

Investing serious resources hedging against that sort of thing is stupid.

I plan for it to some extent, but not hugely. I can cut a lot of bullshit costs from my life by owning something paid for I can repair myself that has $35yr tags and collector car insurance. Even if I pay fanboi tax on the parts truck and brodozer tire tax, it's still pretty minimal.
Then if I start to geek out 486 style and cut my fuel with some filtered waste oil, I might not be full on mad max, but I can do OK for myself.
Moderation is key

It’ll be a federal emission standard.
So get with the fucking times and toss an EV drivetrain in if that happens. Not the end of the world and not something that needs to be planned for.
INB4 the piece of shit people show up soon to portray my "not a big deal" comments as though I'm endorsing the government banning shit.
God forbid someone get the fucking they deserve for insisting on being a dumb old man stuck in the past.

I don’t get the attraction for these

Just get a SXS or a golf cart or if you need it street legal a old ranger or S-10

My state recently banned kie trucks from highway use .

cash for clunkers....

For a time they were cheaper than an SXS and more capable than a golf cart.

Most of the people I know with them have farms and use them for runarounds

Golf cart too weak, sxs too expensive, ranger or s10 too big and heavy. For my uses anyway. Mine was only 1k so that helps, I do prefer my golf cart for many things, it just won’t pull or haul enough some times.

I don't think you understand how cash for clunkers worked. :lmao:
I know very well how it worked...

you're missing the precedent it set.

if you think the Feds will not attempt to stop states from registering old vehicles, I think you're incorrect. They'll just do another C4C campaign over and over until they get their wish...

What precedent set? The feds have been using fed money to manipulate the states for decades.

Cash 4 Clunkers had nothing to do with motivating the states to screw themselves. It had everything to do with over-valuing cheap stuff to manipulate the used car market to fuck us using money stolen from us.
