I am seriously considering purchasing a 95 international 4700 with the 466 and 6+1. its a crew cab with a 16' bed and an a-pump:usa: Its got some big military take offs on it im guessing 53s, so I'm thinking bobtail it'll cruise freeway speeds pretty nice with the OD.

Intended use is a crawler hauler, putting my ramcharger on the bed and pulling a toy hauler with a can-am. Assuming i have to sell my 5er and go to a bumper pull due to hitch location clearances. Id guess ill be putting 6500 on the bed and pulling 12-15k maybe 20k. trying to stay under 65' to keep the party poopers off my ass

I have a class A and am accustomed to long rigs, my questions are mostly performance based

Questions are

  • Going from a 21 ram 3500 with a weight reduction kit:smokin:, i have become accustomed to pulling 20-23k at 75mph with the a/c on, where should I expect the 4700 to pull at?
  • How much power can that 6+1 actually take before i unalive it?
  • hx50 and some plate sliding get me in the 400-420hp range for the 466? hx40 enough to keep temps down? pretty sure its intercooled.
  • I don't need to send any rods to orbit or melt any pistons, will the factory head bolts hold 400-420hp?

466 is good for crazy power.

Although, towing that kind of wieght with that kind of power may be totally different than a quick sledpull or drag race.

I'd expect like 2-4 mpg with what you're talking about

It will be a gutless turd and the 6+1 will make towing heavy loads miserable .

Ditch the 6+1 and swap in a 10 speed. I've driven and worked on both and don't have a good opinion of the 6+1. You'll miss the Ram 3500 for long trips, lot more comfortable than a mid 90s 4700.

Worthless without pics. :flipoff2:

Not until i actually buy it, dont need one of you assholes swooping in and snatching it:flipoff2:

Really that bad? i was hoping for 5....

Define Heavy? I dont intend to ever put 30k+ behind it. I'm not getting rid of the 3500, this is more application speciifc trips like Hammers and Moab.

Double check which 6+1 it has - there are three versions, only one has overdrive, the others end up at 1:1 in top gear
520, 560, and 660 ft-lbs rated, respectively

Good Call

I drove a super 10 in a freightliner the other week was as a big fan. id imagine there's enough space under the 4700 to physically fit it?

Should've clarified its for specific trips where I'm trying to get my rig, and the trailer, and other toys to the same spot.

And maybe using it to get to fordyce instead of pulling a trailer, just drive it up on the flatbed and go.

If its a pipe dream and im being dumb im here to hear it, if it can get the job done and not make me hate every second in the cab then maybe its worth exploring?

Love my 466s, but god damn my 2005 has so much engine noise in the cab it really starts to bug you.

I'm still stuck on this rig. its too cool:flipoff2:

I also like the apocalyptical factor of an all mechanical medium duty on 53s...

damn:beer:

But ya, medium duty be slow

i dont really expect anything to pull withing a stones throw of what my ram does. I understand that. I also tow unrealistically fast for most people, i also understand that.

I also don't want to be doing 35mph up donnor pass just because there's a rig on the back. Being in NorCal i pull a pretty substainal grade anytime i go camping/wheeling anywhere. Wether its donnor pass, grants pass, hell even the grapevine aint small. if it can hold 55-60mph on the hills with 6k on the bed and 12-15k on the hitch life will be fine.

Agreed on swapping out for a ten speed or better.

Buy it, play with the P pump, see if it'll give you the power you want. If not, probably wouldn't be hard to re-sell.

The 466 is a fantastic engine. Best diesel out there in my humble opinion. Not like it'll need it that often, but it's a wet sleeve so you can in-frame it easily. I have its smaller brother; the 360, which is largely the same, displacement aside.

Having family and friends in the truck repair business; the Spicer ES series is not well liked - the synchros like to crap out under normal use, apparently. They say it's more poor design than it is poor maintenance. If you ever wanted to swap a Fuller behind that 466, I should still have the part numbers for the correct clutch and trans input shaft, seeing as the ES is a pull clutch, and the Eaton FS is a push... or the reverse... they're the opposite of each other in any case.

Cool truck!
