I’m going to be building an ‘84 Single cab pickup here soon. I have an FJ80 axle for it. Anybody got pictures of a leaf sprung FJ80 housing? I’m wondering if it would be possible to mount the leafs outside the frame rails to avoid having the passenger side leaf perch being tight on the pumpkin. I’m guessing I’d run into steering issues with the tire contacting the leafs at full turn.

I've done it twice. I'd really have to dig to find pics.

Both times I did "I bolt eliminators"

First time I did Toyota spring spacing, 29" on center iirc. It sucked, was a pain and the perches ended up too tall.

2nd time I did full-size Chevy spacing. 31.5" made a big difference,
still a little tight but do able. Bonus was when I went to tons, I was able to leave my hangers alone.

There are lots of kits out there to outboard the leads to this width also.

Theres room in the diff to channel the housing for the 29.5" centers . Or run a 'full width' hanger and shackles. The extra inch will clear it.

Tire rub is solely dependent on tire and wheel choice.

Also, fwiw, the only time I had issues with tires rubbing with 31.5" oc was 4.75" bs 7x8.5s with 39x13.5 kr2s.

39.5x13.5 iroks on 3.5" bs were fine.

I did an fj80 axle with standard toyota leaf spacing. I notched the housing for the perch. pictures are long gone though...maybe I'll dig up pictures from pirate

this doesn't help much but this is all I could find of it from my old pirate thread.

I welded a piece of metal to keep the inner u bolt from sliding down the diff any more at an angle
