Has anyone in here replaced LBZ Injectors? I am doing a set this weekend. I have done 7.3 powerstroke injectors before and was wondering if there are any nuances. Like on a 7.3 you have to crank the motor over with the glow plugs out to make sure you evacuate any oil because its a HEUI system, I assume that doesnt have to be done on an LBZ. I heard you have to drain the coolant on an LB7 but the LBZs do not have injector cups so you dont have to do that on an LBZ correct?

Was just trying to get any insight on maybe things I didnt think of.

Thanks

I pulled mine, had them tested, and reinstalled them. No special tools, or experience, necessary. Maybe some PB Blaster to loosen them up.

They’re easy to get to. The LB7 had them buried and they were shit quality. LBZ they’re right on top. Remove the lines, remove the hold down, pry them up and out.

DuramaxDiesels.com has the OG's and smart ones hanging around, there's probably a thread on there about how to do it with good insight. I've only done LB7 injectors a couple times, never had to do a set on my one LBZ

At this point it looks like you might have done it already though.

Pretty straightforward. Technically you are supposed to program the injector to the ecm/ficm. There’s a code on the injector you type into the tech2 to do the programming.

If this is like a BMW direct injector that's the joule rating the injector takes to for. It's pretty important for getting the right amount of fuel out of it in a BMW direct injection gas engine.

Injector install is done. I looked for those codes on the injector and couldn’t find one. They were new Bosch injectors, not remans. He got them from injectorsdirect.com he said it’s been running well for a few weeks now.

The install isn’t horrible, just a pain in the ass and time consuming. Getting the injector holes clean sucked in certain holes. The pass side isn’t bad. The driver side back 2 bring the suck.

The only issue we had was the return line. Those clips are tiny, I have giant hands and I didn’t get the clip all the way inserted which I thought I did on the back driver side hole. It popped off and the return line was leaking. Fixed that and since then it’s been good.

He just dropped off a dewalt DCF899 1/2in impact yesterday as a thank you! It’s perfect because I broke my corded 1/2in impact that was older than dirt.

The quotes he had were thousands and thousands of dollars in labor. So he won on cost savings and I got to help someone out and end up with a cool impact gun.

I just hope he doesn’t call me in 6 months saying something is wrong since it was my first time doing it lol. I’d say my biggest fear is the injector hole cleanliness on the back hole. I took my time and got it clean but it was still tough to clean and get to. I try to remind myself some “diezul redneck moron” has probably rubbed dirt on his injectors before install.

Edit: I asked a few diesel mechanics who do duramax’s and the tech 2 programming with injectors seemed to be hit or miss on if they did it or not. Feel free to chime in

Update: It has been about 6 months since install and he drives alot. He said that everything is going well. He had one issue 2 months ago where he pulled up to a light and started smoking white BAD out of the tailpipe. He gingerly pulled it into the gas station 100 feet from the light he was at, turned it off and then back on and never smoked again and its been 2 months since that. I would imagine thats electrical if it stopped doing that after shutting it off and then back on? Kind of odd.

Sounds like an injector stuck open?

Keep an eye on that as an injector stuck open can ruin a lot of other shit.
That’s what’s weird. If it was, it would have ruined a motor by now. It’s been 2 months and thousands of miles since.

It worked fine for months, randomly smoked, turn it off, turned it back on, never smoked again.

I had an injector stick open when my valve cover gasket harness was bad and it wouldn’t stop smoking. Turn on/off and repeat….this was a one time incident
