Laying Sod, how many pallets can I do?

I have nothing to add as far as how much sod can a sodchucker chuck if a sodchucker could chuck sod :flipoff2:
But I saw something about Bermuda grass earlier, and I am only posting to sorta rant because bermuda sod that you buy isn't the same kinda bermuda grass that grows in a peanut field or at a sand mine where you don't want grass. Whatever kind that is basically can't be killed, even running over it daily with dump trucks, it's drought resistant, and never grows so tall that you have to mow it. I wish i could get a yard full of that shit :flipoff2:

Don't you have to do a decent amount of prep for sod?
You can, but you don't have to. If the top 1" of soil is loose-ish, it'll take.

That's perfectly fine if your goal is green and stabilized. Northern Tool sells a $79 turf roller you can use after it gets watered in if you want it flatter.

this is probably true but plugging and top dressing is more than i really want to put into it.

right now, i think ill just rake/drag in a shitload of seed and fertilizer and let it go. pour the water on and will see how it goes.
I would do the seed alone, and once it is growing fertilize it. Make sure to cover it well, and keep it plenty wet.

Edit: you could pre-soak the seed also and give it a jump start.

Try running over your lawn daily with a dump truck...guessing it won't grow either.

someone else was telling me about that last week. saying you pre-soak in warm water? how long to soak? do you let it dry out again.... and if not how do you get it to spread if its all wet and stuck together? bermuda seed is tiny.

We rolled the soil prior to installing the sod. Always worked:homer:

but why? optimum compaction for soil to allow root growth is about 80%.... id rather have it looser than compacted. im sure a roller isnt really doing much other than just smoothing thing out. the real key is getting full contact between the sod and the soil. if there is air underneath, it wont grow.

Again, the correct answer is Mexicans. Your state is full of them. Let Juan figure out how much sod to get.

i live in a secluded area. im usually not particularly keen on introducing unknown people to my house and the items around it that someone may want to steal. if i can do it on my own, i will do so.

thats a hell of a thing. especially keeping it between 65 and 72 degrees. i guess i can do that in the house.
I would think that is the cool side. Hell, Bermuda is nothing but a weed masquerading as grass for lawns. Nothing against it, it’s my preferred drought tolerant lawn thickner.

I believe it is to get rid of any potential air pockets.

But I've never rolled a single lawn prior to sod installation. It's unnecessary.

I always Harley rake a yard before installation and I can see rolling a yard after install if it wasn't installed very well

its much better than crab grass. and atleast it will get very thick. im pulling all my crab grass as i get time to do so. its frustrating but getting the bermuda to fill in should keep it from growing again.

After killing off all of the weeds, we would till the lawn rake it all smooth and then roll it. Then it’s quite obvious how smooth everything is. You have a better surface to work on and there’s there’s very little to create an air gap.

It’s not rocket science, though especially when Bermuda is involved. I’m pretty confident we could successfully install Bermuda across a paved parking lot.

FYI, we would hit the entire lawn with round up once a week for three weeks prior to installing new sod. There are some pre-emergents you can put down underneath the sod, but we only use that a handful of times.

Rolling is to ensure good contact between the sod and subsoil. Air pockets are unlikely after it's watered because it's heavy and pliable.

Rolling prior to installation is counter productive. I'm surprised you roll sod at all with cool season grasses. The only time we roll Fescue is if it got too wet and there was foot traffic to make it lumpy. It's the Bermuda and Zoysia jobs that get rolled.

from the pic of the state of things... I wouldn't put sod on that without prepping more.. I'd tine rake the area and throw down some manure, then just seed and water it... throw the water to it and you'll get enough grass to cover... you don't want a lawn, you want cover... otherwise, the sod is gonna be uneven and like you say, half will die and you'll have wads of sod with nothing growing...

Bonus is you should be able to get pasture herbicides to use on it.

like what? ive sprayed sendero on mesquites near bermuda and it burns it badly. never paid attention to if it kills it. Grazon?

I've done seed on my yard, I guess I'm just too cheap to buy the sod. Throw it down, rake it, and keep it wet. Cooler weather and fertilizer (not weed killer) help it grow faster.

when I was still in school
one day I went to school, I came home and the lawn was done

My step father did it, and he is not farmer smart at all
This is not rocket science, the green square goes on top of the dirt
like a puzzle without the difficulty
