There should be no reason I can't add Powerstroke mufflers and exhaust pipes to a built engine and have it be just as quiet as factory.

I can think of using quality headers like Hooker or building your own, with very thick flanges and primaries. Then just a huge exhaust. And you'd be willing to sacrifice 20-50hp easily in the modern day when 500hp is easily attainable. So make a 550 hp stroked big block, and you have a totally quiet 500 rwhp vehicle.

I honestly have never seen such a thing. Rolls Royce makes silent 550hp vehicles.

Are any aftermarket tinkerers doing this? I'd like a 500hp truck that's as quiet as a 300 I-6 in an F150. wihtout the ford belt squeaks of course.

My wife is driving a 430 HP LS3 daily and its barely audible at full throttle. granted it has factory cut outs on the mufflers, but in quiet mode, it's a normal car.

But it's not 500hp.
 
Series mufflers, with crossover, and full tail pipes to get the sound behind you.

Stock style mufflers are great at sound, but it's hit and miss how much power they murder.

I like my magnaflows, but they're not quiet unless your comparison is straight pipe. I'm running the dual in/dual out 3" behind a 5.7 vortec and when I had it dumped with turn downs under the bed it was obnoxious. Tail pipes were necessary to cut down on cab noise.

dynomax makes a good 3" all the way through muffler that I've been using on everything

they are like $120, but they're well worth it as they're actually quiet
just gotta have a couple bends in the pipe after the muffler or they do drone, put it up and over the axle or whatever
 
large volume muffler, smaller diameter pipe, moar bends, if you want to tune out a specific frequency you can add some smaller tubes that dead head off the main exhaust and adjust length for frequency cancellation. add a couple. and then some more mufflers.

i tried briefly to find an angled glass pack rather than a straight through and wasn't met with success, might have to make one

i really isn't that hard to do. but not nearly as simple as you'd think. for example take a look at a new cars intake.... allot of people have a problem wrapping their head around the idea that quiteing the intake is just as important as exhaust. and 90% of jackasses with loud exhaust are actually sacrificing power to make it louder.


also i think your trying to get at making older motors quieter. but really you have to be looking at alot more than the motor, the entire car needs to be noise dampened.

twin... something is the stereo guy iubet he could write a novel on this

Seen it a bunch of times. The problem is usually the room it takes to have a high flowing muffler that is still doing it's job.

The turbo car above is a good example.

This. Stick a loud chambered muffler in front of a quiet OEM style muffler off a vehicle that makes the HP you wanna make. Ecoboost Ford trucks and vans are a good choice.

Hell, even a glass pack in front of an OEM style muffler makes a big difference.

Depends on if your goal is to make a quiet driving car or to reduce the number of people who can hear you hauling ass down a power line road. Interior plastic squeaking, lifters ticking, intake noise, etc. don't really matter much in the latter application but make a big difference to operator NVH.
 
If you can't afford $3 in rent, you can't afford a quiet engine...just run straight pipes like the douche you are.

Nice! the v10 excursion is running the old muffler off the F650 that got burnt. It barely fits but damn quiet.
 
I currently have a 7.3 on the stand to be built to around 500 horse.


so far the only idea I've had to keep it quiet is pull a muffler off a semi and put it on hangers under to truck. Itd be nice to not have to shut it off through the drive through, but the single shots will probably fuck up that hope.
plan the dynomat the shit out of the cab, too. I fucking hate loud cars and trucks.
 
I once saw a Porche Cayanne loaded up as a picture car with cameras, a honda generator, etc and a crane on top with camera.. It was probably 1500lbs heavier than stock and then loaded with people. It was quiet as a Tesla at idle or acceleration.I wish I had looked under the hood and underneath it to see what was going on with it.
 
If there's space, I'll always run a 53" donaldson with a full tail pipe. On my last truck, I had a full 5" exhaust through a 53" muffler and it was honestly quieter than stock.

Holy shit, that’s a long ass muffler. I might have to try that on my truck to kill the drone.

When I had my SRT-4 I had a 3" system and made 491whp with a dynomax straight through muffler (aftermarket turbo + all the goodies). When I built the engine and stepped up the size of the turbo I went with a 4" exhaust and 2 straight through (in series) 4" in 4" out dynomax mufflers (one was ~12" long and the other ~24"); it was way quieter with the 4" at idle than with the previous 3" and the exhaust note was considerably deeper. Idle volume was close to stock, although it definitely didn't sound stock. And once the WG opened, even with the WG dumped into the exhaust it was loud.

i just put a 5" x 40" Mack muffler on my 98 e350psd. just a chip and filter on it.

exhaust is very quiet, can only hear turbo. the clatter from the front end is something i want to do more about. its been straight piped for the last 4 yrs, and super happy with the exhaust, but damn just made me realize where the noise is

Yeah that's what I'm talking about. The turbo does eat a lot of exhaust note, but the sheer volume of the muffler is what I'm talking about. Lots of muffling in the engine compartment. Cooling tech should be up to the task.

In a full-size truck you also have the option of an elaborate and non-restrictive intake that is totally silent. You could run two Honda 4-cyl airboxes in parallel say.
 
turbo, piping and intercooler are an extremely effective intake muffler on their own

the shriek of the compressor goes pretty much completely away with a couple feet of pipe and a paper element air filter on there
 
I'm getting ready to do some noise reduction myself. My 7.3 has a 5 inch straight pipe but the turbo is substantially louder than the exhaust. I'm hoping lizard skin and dynamat will help

Sweet, that looks to be the style that we use on our volvos, might even have one in the scrap heep I can attack with some sheet metal and an welder to make it usable.

if you can find a way to make single shots quiet to the outside world, you let me know...because I'd be the first in line :laughing:
