Kids bikes

Last harescramble of the season yesterday. Third place finish for a third over all for the season.
Held his line on the start:laughing:

That thing gets out of the hole so much faster than my son's current adventure mini. Kind of want to mess with the clutch now, but it's about to be handed down to our 4 year old, so less spicy is probably better at first.

It has an IRP clutch in it too, so it will scoot like an SOB.

This is on the motocross bike that's geared a little faster.

Well, it's kinda a grown up bike, but if there's a kid on it, it counts right? Did a bit of the old hard (for a 2 year old) enduro this weekend

Big brother was full hype man mode too.
Did a couple laps of the mx track this morning as well. I kept hearing him squealing and thought he was scared, so I'd stop...he immediately starts trying to push the starter button.

Poor guy looses his shit when he has to get off:smokin:

Man, finally watched that vid of Lachlan's start. Little dude has some pretty good form and plenty of confidence. Good job man!

His coach has helped huge with that. Matt raced pro (in Canada) for a couple seasons, and is absolutely amazing with kids. I've tried giving Lach advice before and been told "Dad, I think I'm just gonna listen to the professional ok?"

And he's become a good friend too. Valued member of the team!

Welp, went and had my kid sit on some bikes at the moto shop yesterday. Big store that has all the brands.

Feedback from a 7 year old:
  • no way no how was he fitting on a 65, even lowered, and while he's normally in to try big bikes, even he wasn't interested after hopping on the first one.

  • 110s he on tippy toes and likes the idea of an electric start. He could feel the difference in weight between the yamaha and kawasaki and said the kawi was lighter. He disliked the suspension on all of the 110s, probably because they're trail bikes.

  • He fit perfectly on the ktm/gasgas/husky 50 sx bikes. When I told him about them before, he wasn't really into it because he thought they were the same as his current adventure mini, but now he is figuring out it's a bigger bike. Doesn't like that there is no electric start.

So now I'm at a weird decision point. On one hand he'd probably absolutely shred on the smaller 50, but I think he'd outgrow it within a year. I would also most likely have to be hovering around somewhere to help him start the bike. There are plenty of these bikes out there used with low hours, and I bet in a year I could flip it for about as much as I paid.

On the other hand, the 110s are big, heavy, and trailbike-ish, but he could be a bit more autonomous when he rides because of the electric start. I also found a company that makes triple clamps to run a ktm WP AER 35 fork on the bike and there seems to be plenty of after market swing arms out there for the 110s. There's also a pretty cool clutch kit. They start to look pretty rad all done up:

We're probably not going to be a racing family, so either way these bikes will be trail ridden most of the time. I'm leaning toward the 110s just because of that. The fuel injection of the newer hondas also seems really nice to not have to fiddle with carbs all the time.

The sx50, Lachlan can start on his own. It's a forward kick, which kinda fucks him up for the 65s and up, but he can do it. He's about 49" tall.

It also will get HOT and is hard on stock clutches trail riding. I built a fan kit using a 12v rc battery and an 80mm computer fan zip tied to the rad on the right side, and a 60mm on the left. Also run a 65 impeller and engine ice. Both his 50s have IRP clutches ($$$$$ but make the bike WAY more rideable). Heat kills stators too. I do a top end every 50-60hrs. It's about $120CAD for a vertex kit.

The 110s are HEAVY comparatively, and the suspension and brakes suck. But E start is NICE.

Don't put aside the E5s either. They're awesome on the trail because they have such linear power delivery, and they will last 45 minutes of race pace trail riding. And he can wake up at 630am and ride without pissing off the entire world.

We sat on some of those too. Pretty cool. We also have a friend whose kid trail rides one and they say it can go all day on a charge with no issues. Only thing that gives me pause is about once a year we head down to the desert and dry camp for about a week. Not sure how charging goes with those.... It would suck to run a generator all night just to have his bike ready for the next morning.

2 hours to recharge on the genny. And it's a low draw so it's not rippin, just puttering along charging.

If he's getting a full days ride on a battery, he's pretty easy on the bike. Most of our crew can get 2-2.5hrs on a charge before the lights are flashing. Mud days are hard on em. Sucks a lot of juice.

Ok, that makes a lot of sense. Never rode with friend's kid, but it sort of checks out that he would be riding mellow.

I think I'm still a fan of gas for now.

Ha! my feelings as well.

Talked with the boy this morning as I'm inching closer to pulling the trigger on a new bike for him. He decided he likes all that fancy suspension better than a fancy electric start. I thought about it some more and I like the idea of putting him on a lighter 2 stroke he fits and can shred on now. Wife pretty much said the same thing, but from a mom safety factor of she wants him to have a bike he won't tip over on from time to time since our local riding area is a little cliffy.

Found a deal on a few 2018 ktm 50 SXes around here. Trying to decide if he really needs a 2023 for a few hundred more or not

There are some minor differences between those 2 bikes.

Lach has a '17 and a '23.
The cap on the carb slide is different, one is held on with 2 screws, one is threaded on.
Handlebar clamps are different sizes, and one bike uses mini grips, one uses standard grips, so the factory bars are different too.
One has a steel swingarm, with adjusting nuts on the back, one has an aluminum swingarm with blocks and adjuster bolts integral to the swingarm like big bikes have.

The engine, frame, suspension, brakes etc is the same.

The '23 has the mini grips and aluminum swingarm?

Peeled the top end off the woods bike tonight and found that the bottom end is damn near locked up. So that's neat. Ordered bearings and seals and hopefully they'll be here Monday and I can do that next week.
