This could be very interesting to watch.

The ruling will require Google to leave its store open to its competitors for 3 years.

Adistrict judge declared Google's Android app store an illegal monopoly, and the company must now make a bevy of changes to comply with the law.
Judge James Donato issued a ruling in Epic v. Google. Epic operates its own app store, the Epic Games Store, which has been cordoned off from Google's Play Store on Android devices.
The judge ruled that Google will be required to distribute other third-party app stores within its own app store and allow the other app stores to access its catalogue of programs. Developers can still opt out of any store they please, of course.
Perhaps the biggest portion of the ruling is that developers will no longer have to pay Google the 30% app tax. Gone is the requirement for developers to solely use Google Play Billing, which saw a 30% commission on the sale of paid apps and in-app purchases, including subscriptions.

For a term of three years from November 2024 to 2027, Google will also be required to let Android developers tell users about alternative payment methods, provide download links outside of the Play Store, and set their own prices for apps.
'The provisions are designed to level the playing field.'
At the same time, Google will be restricted from influencing phone carriers, developers, and other distributors through monetary compensation or perks.
According to the Verge, Google will be prohibited from sharing app revenue "with any person or entity that distributes Android apps" or with any entity that plans to launch an app store or platform.
Google also must not offer developers money or perks to launch their apps exclusively (or first) on the Play Store, and they also cannot offer money or perks to developers to not launch their apps on rival stores.
Device makers and carriers cannot receive money or perks for preinstalling the Google Play Store on their devices or purposely not preinstalling rival stores on devices.
The judge agreed that Google had developed so many deals with developers, carriers, and device manufacturers that it was nearly impossible for another store to flourish. Therefore, it is fair to assume that the aforementioned restrictions are in place to prevent the deals Google engaged in.
The three-year term was decided based on plaintiff Epic's request for six years, along with other unmet demands, such as sideloading apps in the store.
The judge justified his three-year term as a window for other stores to grow:
"The provisions are designed to level the playing field for the entry and growth of rivals, without burdening Google excessively," Judge Donato wrote. "As competition comes into play and the network effects that Google Play unfairly enjoys are abated, Google should not be unduly constrained as a competitor."

"The app store is temporarily disabled due to legal action. Please send all comments to District Judge James Donato, San Francisco Courthouse, Courtroom 11, 19th Floor, 450 Golden Gate Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94102."

See how that goes.

Wasn't this the deal where Epic was trying to do in-app purchases to cut google out of the loop on their fees for the play store? Seems like Epic could have just made their own app store like Amazon did if they wanted to sell to consumers directly. Fuck 'em and the judge they rode in on.

doesn't that require sideloading ability?

And google/apple were/are charging 30%+ for the privilege of being on the store. That's a big cut.

So they want to sell apps on the Play store but not pay the Play price? :flipoff:

y'all would be all up in arms if Microsoft had forced y'all to buy windows apps for your PC only from MSFT. :flipoff2:

Not really sideloading. You just have to turn on "install unknown apps". And I'm not even sure you have to do that with the latest....mine I just have to confirm that I'm intending to install a 3rd party app that was downloaded. Amazon has their own "app store" app that you can download and then get apps from them just like you do from the play store. Apple is far more locked down as far as installing 3rd party apps goes.

Yes I would. And that's part of why I dont Apple.
However, as Gaiden said, I can install whatever I like from whatever shady site I like on my Android.
Forcing Google to include someone's crap on their store is BS.

MSFT tried, there was a big push when Windows 10 came out to sell Windows in S Mode, that would only allow you to install apps from the msft store. big pushback and s mode was dropped in all but the home version of windows 11.

It's that you can't install the Epic store without the play store.

You may be able to find and download an APK and install stand alone. It's a pain in the ass though.

The bullshit thing about the 30% is they have to pay that forever. Your onX subscription? 30% goes to google every year after you downloaded it once.... That is what the developers are trying to get past.

I agree, charge for the initial sale, but charging for later in-app purchases is dumb.

Seems easily available...

Fuck Epic. Tencent, Chinese company who heavily invests in Western media to push CCP bullshit, bought the majority control of Epic years ago and has been offering tons of games and shit for free to gain market control. They also developed Easy Anticheat and have made it available free to developers to worm their way into that. They're why I no longer use my Windows PC at home for anything but gaming because EAC has become so prevalent.

They pulled this lawsuit shit once already to worm their way into Apple and now they're doing the same shit with Android.

That's been standard for these stores for years though, it's not just Google. Apple, Steam, Microsoft, etc all charge the same 30%. You don't have to use Play store to install apps either, you've always been free to sideload whatever you want on Android. It's like a judge ruling Microsoft's store on Windows is a monopoly because he doesn't understand you can just install whatever you want without it. The stores are generally just a UI to make installation easy for less tech literate people.

Fuck Google, too.

I don't have a TV and hate sports :flipoff2:
Well fuck, argument invalid :laughing::flipoff2:

Usually its the fucks who park their ass on a couch all day Sunday watching sports ball that give people a hard time for gaming. I do it because I hate watching TV

Stop with fucking video games.
Go work on your shit in the garage like a normal adult. :shaking:
Says the guy trying to tell other adults what to do with their time and money. :shaking:

I spent my 20s in the garage doing garage shit and buying trucks and it's the reason I didn't buy a house when it was much more affordable. Now I don't have a garage because I live in the shittiest housing market in the country and can't afford one, let alone garage hobbies despite solid income. What I can afford while saving to buy a house and garage is a hobby that generally costs me less than a grand a year and keeps me in the house where I'm not spending money. But please, lecture me more about how my budgeted hobby is immature.

Ugh. Not really paying attention, I didn't know Tencent was behind this. :mad3:
