JD D170 38" Deck

First of all, this isn't a super cool FordFascist mower build. I just want something I can ride on to mow 1/3rd acre and possibly moving trailers around.

There is a sticker on the hood that says 1st shift, 6/8/1989. Got if for free from a fancy neighborhood but it needed some new belts and the battery was bad. Currently trying to figure out why it wont run off gas but will off starting fluid.

Cool project! Carb rebuild is the first place I would start.

From the ZT thread I think saw that the kawasaki engine was good, Kohler was bad so that's nice.

Also on YT I saw the deal next to the starter stuck a plunger creating a no start issue.

So after replacing the drive belt It moves around the yard but is slipping or burning up the belt. You can see smoke coming off the thing. Pulleys are hot to the touch but it's the correct part # belt.

Pulleys loose or not spinning easily?

I was having the same problem, take everything apart and pull the grass out of everything, pully, pully bearings, pivot points, lube everything, check your springs, and double check the length of your belt

I found grass (shocker) in about every part that I listed on mine and now it runs proper

So I started the thing up in hopes to irritate my wife but I didn't see any smoke. Didn't do anything since the last time.

Got under the thing to look at the pulleys. Both were loose so I tightened them with a wrench and went for a 15 min cruise around the block.
