I looked for a drone thread, but that word is used a lot on this board.

Anyways, I got one about a month ago. DJI mini 3 pro. Today was the first day I have flown it not in my yard. It was a good time until I forgot to bring something to charge the remote control. 🤷‍♂️. I had a bunch of batteries for the drone itself. 🤦‍♂️

Let me know what you think. I do struggle a little with moving both joy sticks at the same time.

I found out the hard and expensive way that the "home" feature on my drone means first going vertical... yup, I ran mine into a tree when trying home:shaking: That cost a pretty penny. I should break it out again to work on my tree avoiding skills:lmao:

I mostly take stills with mine. The best pics I have are now metal prints on my walls.

On most clear nights I see two drones flying over our little town. One small and the other twice as big. Big one always lower altitude.

Because there are so many trees around my house. I have not tried that feature. I probably could have tried it yesterday.

Mine is fairly small. If it’s up for about 25 meters, you cannot hear it or see it.

I've got the Holystone, I can't bring myself to fly it with just the phone screen, I have to see it...lol
Everybody tells me I need goggles so I can be in first person view.
How are you flying it?

Speaking of drones....Are any of those $50 drones on Amazon any good at all? I would like to get some pics of my property.

Do you use a lens filter? I bought one, but mostly it was to keep me from scratching up my camera lens.

No filters on any of those. Pics were taken with a Mavic 2 Pro and a Mavic 3 pro. I did a little post processing using the stock Photos app on my Mac.

I use the DJI RC controller with a built in touch screen. The screen is slightly bigger than my iPhone.

A few times I lost track of it in the sky, but I could mostly tell where it was from the screen.

I'm using the same controller.

can't say I've ever been fucked by a dead transmitter battery when I got to the field......

was a game changer when dad bought a field charger.

It looks like that DJI transmitter isn't a complete pile of shit and it has adjustable sticks. I would maybe look into some stick toppers to help you better get on them. Are you flying thumbs or thumbs and forefingers?
no idea what DJI threads are so you're on your own to figure that out.

Have you got a transmitter tray? May also be a great help.
You can get them with armests and such.

I use my thumbs mostly. With no fine motor skills I’m using most of my forearm to control it. Rolling my wrists and things.

No tray, just a strap. Because I am seated, it sits in my lap.

My chair has a USB adapter, so I should have plugged the controller in as I imagine It would run forever on 2 car style batteries. I think it’s weird that you can’t swap the controller batteries, just the drone.

"real" RC transmitters have replaceable batteries.
always have.

so here's an interesting thought.
Would a full sized joystick be easier for you to manage? cause that can happen
mavlink allows for a PC based ground station, so you could use any input device you wanted.

Whats the location of the first and last pics?

I would assume Utah or NM but precisely as you feel like typing out. Love to visit both

Castle Valley UT (just outside of Moab)

Second is the bridge just north of Sedona headed up Oak Creek

Was talking with the FAA about low flying planes and found out it's apparently illegal to fly a drone within 5 miles of an airport without express permission from the airport.

And airport being anything from a huge commercial operation or a private grass strip.
IE, pretty much no fly zone in any populated areas of the state.

And all drones are supposed to be "registered", even toys.

I have an app on my phone that asks for permission from the local airfields every time I fly at the house. Aloft iirc. Because my drone is under 249 g I believe it does not yet need to be registered. But I totally could be wrong.

With my luck the one day I would get caught with the wrong battery in it. The replacement batteries are too heavy.

Ya, and a couple clicks on an app and you can get instant approval up to whatever elevation that area is rated for. LAANC authorization via Air Control is what I use.

The drone isn't required to be registered as long as flying weight is 249 grams or less unless used as a Part 107 flight.

The FAA guy made it sound like it was a per case deal and needed permission from the airport manager, like had to meet with him and get a letter.

I was flying at 200ft on MY land and had planes flying lower. Said it was my responsibility to move.

I told him that's kind of screwed up, since they are 300ft too low and on my property.
I'd be like saying If I'm hiking on my path and a car decided to trespass drive there, it's my responsibility to move out of "their" way.

And yes, I fully realize a $300 drone < a Cesna with 4 people in it.

Here is Fairbanks, all those blue areas with 100' and 200' you can get auto authorization up to that elevation. Air space can be classified differently and there can be added restrictions such as no fly zones around certain airports, but it's not hard most of the time.
