Seems like kids these days lug it around instead of visiting the locker between classes.
At my school, we used our lockers. Did you?

If you have kids, ask them about it.

yes, I had the same locker for all four years
didn't keep anything of value in there other than books, or sweaty gym cloths if you need to steal those then help yourself

My daughter is in HS and lugs around 40lbs of shit on her body in a back pack . I think most of it is non school items, but she doesn't use a locker
I don't look in there, but I am fairly confident if they put a metal detector in the school. I will get calls from the office

All this.
I dragged my 15yo daughter's backpack out of the Jeep tonight and asked her why she's carrying around rocks.
She says she doesn't have time between classes to run the length of the school twice. I dunno, maybe she spends her time jawing. I didn't.

That was my problem the last 2 years. Locker was in a hall, I didn’t have any classes in. Only 5 minutes between bells. No time to get there and back.

My daughter just started at a new school where lockers are "optional". She doesn't want one and says out kids don't use them. Teachers say that's been the case since the Kung Flu.

I remember that issue for myself it seemed a few years the locker was located in an area I had no classes. Rendering it pointless to even have one and get to class in time

My HS seemed to go out of their way to give you a locker that was nowhere near any of your classes. Add very short times between classes and very small hallways compared to the people count and it was usually impossible to use it for much.

If you were in PE you did get an assigned locker room locker so at least you were lugging dirty gym clothes

Starting my freshmen year, I didn't take school work home... I refused.... I would do it during lunch, or during other classes, but I never did have to take anything home. There for, I didn't carry a back pack. I would dash from classrooms to my locker. Throughout my 4 years, I had a couple classes that were too far from my locker and I worked out a deal with the teacher where I could keep my book in their room (small 1A school, so most teachers only had 2-4 classes a day at most).

I had classes that were close together and I'd carry my books to class for that. Few of us had backpacks/book bags. You just carried shit like men.
However, I tried to make it back to my locker a much as possible. Chrissy was right next to me throughout my duration in TX schools. Just imagine.....this is her at 50 and a doctor.

Where do they put their coat, boots, gloves, gym gear, shop gear, etc?

Nope. We were allowed to carry backpacks and I could not be bothered to learn the combo or deal with the lock. I may have had 1 class that required me to carry a textbook. The others said to leave it at home for the homework. 4 minutes between classes was barely enough to get from one end of the building to the other.

School provided free lunches for all students so there was no point in packing a lunch.

Yes, but just carried books.
My daughter is in middle school, she says depending on the classroom location, the breaks between class are so short she physically can't get from room, to locker, to next room in time, so she has to carry stuff for two classes to not be tardy to class #2 sometimes. No laptops issued here. I believe her, she's no slouch.

Yeah, but not for books and shit. I'd just end up shoving endless amounts of jackets and hoodies in it til the end of the year then my mom would be furious over how much laundry she had to do.

By the end of high school I started sticking everything in it. Never used the books and by then I was so done with giving a shit about high school I wasn't going to keep lugging a backpack full of books all over the school. Only shit in my backback by then was a lighter, pack of unfiltered Camels, a hoodie, ipod, headphones, whatever personal books I felt like reading. Most teachers would leave me alone and let me read my own shit as long as I wasn't being disruptive. Had the ipod for the ones that wouldn't. Ipod in the front hoodie pocket, headphone cable run under and back up the hoodie and down one arm so I could lean on the desk with an ear bud in.

My kids don’t have lockers. Many carry 2 backpacks to school and home. School backpack on back, sports backpack on the front. Or they stack them on their back.

Sports back pack is tossed in a locker room or on the floor of the athletic center. Both places are just piles of back packs. The lockers remain empty in those areas.

It’s weird.

We mostly used lockers in school.

I never used a locker. The school was too big. I carried all my books in a back pack and small duffle bag.

My son is in middle school, and uses one.

Yes, had all my shit “organized” so I only had 1-2 periods of shit with me at any one time. I never wore a backpack, if you have homework to actually do at home you’re not using your time wisely, school work stays at school. Think our breaks between periods were 5 minutes or so and you had enough time to get back and forth to you locker the way the classrooms to locker were set up.

First got lockers in 7th grade. I barely had enough time to get it open, don’t know why I thought I would be hanging out next to it talking to friends half the day.

My buddies and I would share our lockers. Keep the books for a class in your buddies locker nearest that class.

My kids were pack mules.

Im surprised your school has books.

I don’t think my kid had any books. They were either a class set, digital, or a handout.

Grew up in Wisconsin and used the locker during high school every day, both for books and jackets. Our granddaughter's high school in Ramona, Ca. had lockers, but they were not allowed to use them. The "official reason" was to combat drug use.

I picked out two or three lockers so I had stuff where I needed it. Everybody was issued one but there were more lockers than kids so it didn’t matter.
