Busted up my right thumb this weekend. Jammed it into a rock instead of face planting :shaking:

Urgent care didn’t have X ray machine, so I went to an imaging place yesterday. It’s broke. I’m waiting for the radiologist to read it a send it to the urgent care.

Wondering what might be recommended for me to do about this? Cut it open and remove the piece? Or just leave it in there and hope for the best?

Not much can be done for fingers besides immobilize it and hope it heals in a way that will retain as much function as possible. Your age might make a difference on the treatment plan too.
My guess is the Dr will want to put it in a splint/cast for 4-6 weeks, then run you through some physical therapy exercises to try to get the range of motion back. I don't think they'd do surgery on a finger unless it was an amputation.

I broke my thumb a long time ago, and it wasn't too bad.

Met with the ortho today. Surgery is scheduled for next Tuesday to run a pin up through the bones, from the base of the thumb to the tip. Pin gets removed in 4 weeks. Ugh.

Ignore it:homer: That is why my pinky knuckle doesn't protrude as much as the rest of them.

Guy at work smashed the ends of 2 fingers between aluminum 2x2 angle and a chop saw fence. Surgeons showed him the x rays and said "good luck, they're smashed. We can cut you open and hope we find and take all the pieces out and shorten those fingers by 10-20mm, and you possibly have horrible pain in those fingertips forever, or we hope it heals up kinda sorta, and you maybe don't have horrible pain in those fingertips forever."

So there's that.

Think I’d just go back to the chop saw, and cut 25mm off myself then come back for stitches. Cheaper way to get better results than option 2 they gave him. Probably would hurt less and heal faster

Hey, I've got one of those! Except left.

I dropped a telescoping ladder on it, guillotined it good.

No treatment, and it seems to be healing up...

I worked with a guy who fed his finger to a jointer, took 3 or 4 operations to get the shreds of nail bed that were left inside his finger to stop growing finger nails inside him. He's got a hammer shaped finger now.

I have almost that exact same thing in my pointer finger on my left hand. When I read stories about POWS being tortured by hurting their nail beds I respect them that much more.
