I changed out the old thermostat for a programmable one as we are still moving from NC to SC and I want to control the temp for when I'm going down. Hooked this up and all I get is warm air blowing when it's on cool. What did I wire wrong. I have an old Payne heat pump and the T5 Honeywell thermostat

Did you take photos or notes how the old one was wired?

If you go to the heat pump and pop the service panel there will likely be a wiring diagram for the terminal blocks in there on a piece of paper, or it will be silk screened on the terminal blocks themselves.

Also did you set it up for correct cooling/heating configuration?

I didn't grab a picture as I was in a hurry. Attached the thermostat wire connection at the unit.

Here is the wiring schematic. It shows violet going to w3. In the unit the brown and blue are twisted together.

Did you configure it as a HP in t-stat? If not O will not be energized with a call for cool, hence the warm air.

So you didn't follow the clear and concise instructions and the chart for writing down the wires on the old and transferring them over to the new thermostat?

I just installed a Honeywell thermostat.
:flipoff2:

Is the problem with older systems not having a constant 24 volts at the thermostat?

I did

Why would I do that when I can just hope it's easy and I can come here and ask questions??????????!!

Unit is from 09 so not that old

I did figure it out and the ac is blowing cold air. White wire needed to be in W and not W2

I had a job a few months back where another company landed white on w as you did and it ran electric heat with a cooling call. I assume that’s why the flap says don’t do that on a HP. Same stat.

W is for first stage heat, w2 is for second stage. The flap says not to use w with a heat pump..... Are you sure you have the change over valve wired correctly/tstat setup properly for your setup?

It's cooling so I guess I do. I have it set up a single stage heat pump, air to air

I saw that as well and pulled the white wire and got nothing. Found a post somewhere saying to put in w2 and it works
