Main heat pump and air handler in the house being replaced today. Been battling inability to pull humidity out of the air for years. The heat pump is simply too big for the house.

So... I'll have a spare 5-ton heat pump and air handler.

I have a 1500' barn... 12'6" ceilings. Mezzanine at one end.

Since this stuff is "free," and is all electric... thinking about throwing them in the barn. Heat pump outsize under one of the lean to's... Air handler on the mezzanine... Couple of ducts in the ceiling... call it good.

I have no illusions keeping the barn at 75 degrees and 45% humidity...

Stupid idea?

I am an HVAC idiot, so take this with a grain of salt.

I put a 3.5 Ton unit in my shop (well insulated 36x40x14) for heat (have not hooked up the AC yet) and have been happy with it. the blower is a little anemic, but some ceiling fans seem to help out.

All free from my BIL's house when he upgraded.

As soon as i braze the copper and charge the system, AC will be ready to go. Summers in KS are hot and humid, so I have relatively low expectations, but as you inferred, any little bit helps.

I would say the biggest concern would be the insulation in the barn and if it would be up to the task of maintaining any kind of HVAC effect.

Agree that it'll all be for naught w/o addressing insulation. Walls are "done...." ceiling is on the docket for this year.

I Doubt you will get down to 45%, but I'd run it.

You'll do better than you have now.

Do it.
I recycled my Carrier heat pump.
Gutted the indoor enclosure, matched a evaporator core from Goodman, added a TXV, replaced the blower motor (120 to 220)

I worked for a Carrier dealer when I was in high school during the summer for a few years

Piece of cake..

How can I help?
