How to move a lot of dirt

Lol…You know who didn’t understand this? Kiewit when they bid that power line job just across the board by NY through Granville and Whitehall. There’s literally quarries all over for slate and granite but they screwed it up

Granville is loaded with slate! Hence the name. :homer:

Natural stone walls don't exist here like back home. No such thing as clearing a field of its rock and being able to gather enough to build a 3' high wall around the entire farm.
Ive thought about bringing rocks down south when I saw what they sell for there. I have more of them than I know what to do with. I’ve built 3 walls at my house from those exact type of walls. Paid by the contractor to remove them and dumped at my house. Now I’m just just dumping them over the bank at my mechanics shop

Yeah the guys from that planning phase were from Kentucky or somewhere in that region. I never knew they were such a large company. Not to mention every house that way has local sourced slate roofs lol.

This is pretty typical in the 5-15k range
that would be worth more in scrap here. Last I knew California had a weird scrap market and my uncle was paying to get rid of tin?

Not that ive ever heard of. As long as I can remember its been between $125-300/ ton

Around here those really big loaders come up for sale cheap regularly. Seems like they would be more useful than a scraper in the future. Not sure if moving that distance with the loader is practical. Like others said, a tractor and a dump trailer might be enough for that job.

I know you have a much bigger job, but I moved 10’ by 10’ by 30’ with a my 30 hp tractor. About 200’ distance. It took a number of days, but I didn’t work 8 hours a day either.

What does granite go for in FL? I could come up with 10,000lb of it a lot faster than I could come up with 10k of used machine tools.

Kiewit is an international company if I'm not mistaken. I also know they bought out Haywood Baker back before I left RI to move here and I know HB was International. I deal with their drilling division fairly frequently, they have a couple of our drill rigs down here.

We must be talking about different geographies, operators or machines.

Yeah I'd think a paddle scraper would get er done. Those things are quite nimble and can damn near turn around in their own tracks with a little extra room. Good teeth on the front make them dig 1000% better. As others have said if you have a bunch of rocks it'll probably not be good for that though.

I have a Caterpillar 613B that I need to get back up in shape again and level some fields and build up some roads...

Teeth are an interesting idea, never seen them on scrapers, but makes sense.

Even if I'm wrong and it works perfect. $10k+ transport and fuel to move 1000 yards of dirt, and then be stuck with something that's not very useful for anything else, and isn't an easy sell doesn't appeal to me at least.

There is a little paddle wheel that's been for sale near me on the highway for like 3 years.

I'd much rather buy a skid steer and do 1000 trips, but be stuck with something useful and easy to sell.

What kind of loser sells stuff? :flipoff2:

assuming your 938 scoops 4 yd/ trip up/down the hilll and you can do that in 5 minutes round trip (in all reality, you cant do that- digging with a wheel loader is not going to be that easy unless you live on a sand dune.)

you'll move 1200 yds in25 hrs.

but more realistically, assuming your running in range 2 at 8 mh and average 3 yds with an 8 min round trip youll move 1200 yds in 60 hrs if you dont sleep.

That Cat 613B we have had teeth on it when we got it, but they were worn the fuck out. We tried using it and it wouldn't fill itself up more than halfway on a long pass. Took those teeth shanks off, ground them down to fit some standard twin point backhoe teeth on it and then put them back on, and it went to filling itself over full in like 1/4 of the distance. Amazing what some fresh teeth will do for something like that!

These are the only two pics I have of it, and they were from the guy that was selling it. Had it trucked in from Oklahoma if I remember right. I think we paid $13,000 or 13,500 for it. The exhaust stack rotted off shortly after we got it and I put a straight pipe and turndown on it and it exits behind the front axle now. It is a blast to run the damn thing, and you get pretty quick at it. Brakes were pretty crappy, but normally I wouldn't even touch them, just downshit through the gears to slow down and lower the pan and start the paddles to dig. When you get full then you raise the pan and shut your paddles off and haul ass to where you want to dump. Dump on the fly to spread the dirt out or build your road up and turn around and head back for another load.

I looked at his hill and said 613:laughing:

I don't know if it was explained, but it's far from flat, it is a fucking hike to the top of his property, any machine will be in 1st gear uphill, cycle times aren't going to be quick.

It's sandy AF but he said it's clay 5 feet down

He has a d4 dozer there, I didn't notice if it's got rippers or not, but I'd be ripping and using they blade to cut away at the hill and then grab the paddle wheel to run a couple loads.

If it wasn't so close to the house, he could probably have his 7yo on the dozer. If the hill wasn't so steep, he could have him on the scraper:laughing:

Buy skid steer and dump trailer

Maybe rip with the dozer, throw 15 steel wheels 8' from the house to clang if the kid was getting too close, have him load a dump trailer pulled with the ford, he could dig and stockpile while the truck is hauling, run dozer on his ice cream breaks

Just to clear things up, im dumping the sand over the edge of a bank so I dont think a paddle wheel scraper will do that. Also any dump trailer that I use probably wont be able to have more then 3 yards in it if I want to be able to pull it up the hill with a pickup. That combined with no real turn around room would bring the suck.

Find a big loader bucket and fix it to the blade of that dozer. It would function like a U-blade and get you a large volume of material per push. Is the undercarriage up to the task?

I think a F-something or other will be cheaper to buy and easier to sell once done.

Sell dozer and buy a CAT 953 or 963. Then buy a pup truck.

No way

This is what I'm talking about, no way you can buy a functional dump truck cheaper.

$1500, I'd just keep it around.

Looking at that again, it's bigger than what I thought, not sure the d4 would handle it well
