How scared of a high mileage 6.4 powerstroke would you be?

I have a friend who is a fleet mechanic, one of the foremans is getting a new truck, and they've asked my friend if he or anyone he knows wants the old one, for whatever he thinks it is worth (either that or they send it to auction) They don't really seem to care about top dollar, but don't want to just give it away, whatever that means.

So, 2008 F250, CCSB, 4x4, 6.4 diesel with 400+k miles on the original engine. Interior and exterior are in reasonable shape for the mileage. The only major thing done was having both turbos replaced a couple years ago. I've been casually looking around at 05 and up V10 trucks (because fuck high maintenance expensive brodozer diesels) for weekend towing/camping duties.

Is this engine a time bomb? Is there a fair price y'all would be comfortable paying for a truck like this to take a gamble? Is it a case of "if there were going to be major problems they would have surfaced by now"?

I would be in around 5k maybe if it's clean. That will leave you 5k to put back and end up where you could have started.
OR
$5k and Cummins swap...

I would only buy a 6.4l if I had another 8-12k burning a hole for the replacement engine build and delete tuning.

My grandpa's 08 ate three turbos before burning a hole in a piston with less than 100k mi.

400k on the original engine? If that's true, they should send that piece of shit back to IH and Ford to figure out how they got that one right. I wouldn't touch a 6.4 with 0 miles unless it was fucking free or cheap enough to make money parting it out. If you could be in it 2k it'll probably make it to your house so you can part it out and put the proceeds toward something worth owning.

If you could get it cheap i would just to see how much longer it lasts.

If you've got some money to burn they can put down some serious power.

Give them 2500 and drive it till it breaks then part it out or scrap it. I had an 08 6.4 I put 280,000 on and a sub contractor bought it from me almost 3 years ago he had put another 150k on it and haven’t had a complaint he said it runs great??

The 6.4L PowerStroke is the reason why Super Duty axles are so cheap today. Don't pay more than the scrap value as it was on borrowed time the day it drove off the assembly line.

Like pretty much everyone else said. Don't pay more than what you can part/scrap it for. The reason they have any redeemable use is if you engine swap them. Usuallythey have low miles and peoplejust want them gone. I've never hard anyone say anything good about the 6.4 that has had one for more than a year.

Yea, thanks for setting me straight guys. I wish I had a nicer older rig needing a 05+ front end swap, or a similar wrecked truck needing body parts, but sadly I don't.

The idea of getting it just to see how much farther it would go, and probably still being able to get my money back out of it if I scrap it later was sounding not bad, except for eventually having to deal with a truck breaking down (never seems to happen at a convenient time) and only having scrap value, my time is too valuable to deal with that BS these days.

400k on a 6.4 is a fucking unicorn

other than that, if you're not getting it, where's it?

I have a hammered Cummins truck, might be time for another Fummins

What part of the country is it in?

this truck belongs in the Smithsonian, it has to be the only 6.4 that made it over 300k
