My TJ has had synthetic line for about 10 years or so, I don't use the winch all THAT much, maybe a few times a year, except for the past few years where I really haven't wheeled that much. Getting the itch to do more wheeling, and since I don't keep the jeep in a garage (it's either out in the open, or under a temporary carport/tarp), I'm wondering if I should just replace the line. It's starting to look kinda old, I'd hate for it to snap while in use.

How long do yall run your line? I'll snap a photo of it.

If it breaks tye it together pull till it breaks again, aeternum. Get home buy a new rope. Or take the fun out and buy a new rope before you are all jacked up.

I have the same line on my winch on my flatbed trailer out in the phoenix sun uncovered for 3 years and it still looks like new when you get down a couple wraps. I'd say run it or if really worried unspool some till it looks good and put a new end on it there.

If it was me I would just run it till it breaks, then tie it back together. I’ve done this plenty of times.

If you don’t like that idea you could always pull out the top layer that is sun faded, cut it off, and splice a new eye into the end.

Or go buy a new one and contact me, because I’ll be interested in your old line.

Hmm.. that sounds like a good idea. cut off the line that is on the top wrap, and just keep using the rest of it. I think I'll do that. It's rare for me to use the entire line for a pull, so missing the first 10 feet or so will be fine.

do you want the first 10 feet of my line? I'll send it to you with a beer :lmao:

yeah I would keep the line and could make lots of stuff or practice lacing it back to make a loop that you can use a d-ring with or tons of random stuff with it.

Our last jeep had rope, and It got cut twice. Each time we tied it back together and kept on going. Just before we sold it we put the original cable back on. I kept the rope for 2 years in my garage thinking... "this is still good", then finally threw it away when moving. I like rope because it isn't as dangerous as cable, but it is more susceptible to damage and just plain aging from the elements. I wouldn't run rope on a jeep that is outside every day, otherwise I feel like you would be replacing the rope every year or 2.

When mine got faded, I unspooled it. Swapped the thimble to the "good" end and spooled the faded end on the drum.

The first 15-20' of mine was pretty ragged so I replaced the entire length. However I took what looked good and made several soft shackles with it.

I just had my little rzr winch out, and decided to replace the line while it was out. I cut off the worst looking piece of the old line, threaded two heavy duty thimbles on it, and will carry it as an extension line or tow rope. Takes up way less room than a real strap, and is 30’ long. Obviously can’t handle any abrasion, but whatever.
