What's new

How hard is inflation going to hit, or has hit?

I think it's a moot point. I've stripped a lot of interiors and you can see the difference/increase in sound proofing material.

If you took a weekend, $500-1000, and followed ProjectTwin advice... any pickup can be made quiet and comfy.
You could probably quiet a steel truck up. But the difference isn’t the factory sound deadning material. For aluminum to have the same relative strength compared to steel, it has to be thicker. The panels on these things are much thicker than the steel panels are. These aluminum trucks don’t dent the same as steel because of the thickness. I know when they are damaged it’s a lot bigger deal to repair. In a vehicle fire they can’t even stop the aluminum vehicle from burning to the ground.

Constructionally though to reiterate, the aluminum is not the failure that the critics hedged their bets it would be.

Its not a huge deal, just something that needs to be addressed. The seam sealer just doesnt stick. If you have the windshield replaced (was $375 for the base) just scrape and reseal. If you get water in the cab, you know why.

I also fucking hate the sliding rear window. The tracks are glued to the glass so its all one piece to replace.
my f350 is caught in the windshield replacement recall... apparently, some additive in the paint/clear prevents the windshield from sticking in an impact... Makes one wonder when the paint will peal off the aluminum can....

antilock brakes have gotten me into far more trouble than they’ve ever saved me.
x2 antilock brakes are horrible for dirt road driving, one of these days i will run a toggle switch to the fuse to temporarily disable them

Some prices I've seen, and the sudden interest in things I have for sale makes me think that this inflation has farther to go, and I'm thinking I'm going to hold back equipment and diesel trucks, but sell normal cars and toys at these prices.

For the 1st 6 years IIRC, Weimar Germany never registered as hyper inflation, the mark lost 96% of its purchasing power ( ie, a dollar was 4 pennies), but the month over month inflation was always in this side of the line, and it just eroded show and steady

Just change what is used to measure.... US govt has been doing that does decades. Oh, housing is up 300%, pffft, we’ve subsidized corn to ensure it is only $1.00/bushel and that’s what portends inflation.”

The torque management and antilock brakes combined have gotten me into far more trouble than they’ve ever saved me. ... I hated all 3 of them and it’s 100% due to nanny controls.
stomping the throttle pedal hard enough to break it off
"FUCKING GO YOU PIECE OF SHIT, NO I DO NOT WANT BRAKES I WANT GO!"
best part is when the traction control puts you into the oncoming lane when you're just gently pulling away from a stop sign

FUCKING FORUM BULLSHIT
how do I use asterisks without it autocorrecting them into italics?

My tacoma does this. Foot to floor, no reply. Drives me nuts. I did have one time it may have saved me. Found myself suddenly sideways on the highway and it did some brake dance and straightened out which was nice. Driving in snow it sucks. I need some fucking wheel speed give now plz.

I've decided to invest in old rusty muscle cars... I'm not sure if they are a safe bet but they are more fun to tinker with than gold or silver.

02 4runner tc is so invasive that it has almost caused me two accidents on dry pavement...

Wired in a switch... Andy mod, iirc... couple of lights but 1000% easier to drive.

I’ve had a new truck every two years on average since 2005, so I’ve been fairly immediately up to date with base level truck changes. The 18 up trucks have a level of torque management I find to be absolutely unacceptable. That feature is meant to save the vehicle from getting damage. In my case it lends to causing damage to the vehicle.

The torque management and antilock brakes combined have gotten me into far more trouble than they’ve ever saved me. I had a 2015 aluminum truck, that was the last truck I considered a GREAT truck. I then had a 2018 Ford, then a 2018 GMC. Now I’m in a 20 Ford. I hated all 3 of them and it’s 100% due to nanny controls.
Agree.

We were towing the SXS up a STEEP mountain road that was bumpy (made a thread on this in the old place), and the torque management killed all power. I had it to the floor on a good 20% incline with a cliff behind me.

Fuck torque management and the whiny, bitch ass ****s it’s made for.

sounds like traction control
torque management is about limiting power on transmission shifts for clutch life, or just power in general when in low range and lower gears to keep from twisting axles off
big reason why they can have those ridiculous 1200 ft/lb at the flywheel bullshit ratings is that they'll only apply that much low rpm fuel when you're in the higher gears

Yeah it’s actually “advance trac” that shuts it off on low traction situations. Making a bad situation worse, yeah you were short on traction but you still had momentum. Now you have to take off from a dead stop up hill pulling a trailer.

Torque management advance trac and ABS are all 3 doing a dance that feels like was meant to kill me when I’m in a precarious situation off-road. You can’t turn it completely off on the newer trucks like you can the older ones. You can push the button twice and it will say “advance trac off” but if you get 1 wheel not spinning the same speed as the rest it will still flash the light and cut power.

Press and hold that traction bullshit button for I believe 5sec. 1st thing I do every time I start my Fords. Supposed to turn off that shit.

What year is your truck? The older ones that works. But on the newer ones it doesn’t. You push that button once and it says “traction control off”. Wait for that light to go off, hold the button down again for 5 seconds and it will say “advance trac off”.

But if you get stuck in the mud or snow it will still flash the light and modulate the ABS. Even with the rear locker locked in.

The individual brake tap traction systems usually work pretty good on its own once you figure out how to turn the cut engine power part of it off.

Works on my 2016 f150 work truck and my 2020 f350 tow pig. Both in 4x4 in mud, sand quite often with the 150 in it daily.

The traction control tuning you get (both when the system is "on" and when it's "slightly less on by lying and telling you it's off" can depend a lot on the trim you buy.

Two of my friends have 2018 Lesbaru Outbacks. One guy has the mom-trim version. The other guy has the outdoorsy bull dyke trim. The mom mobile won't back a 2000lb trailer up a small grade. It thinks you're trying to peel out and won't let you apply enough throttle. The outdoorsy bull dyke one will tackle the kind of sloppy muddy hill climb a vehicle like that has zero business being on (with street tires no less). I've had the same experience with rental Jeep Renegades as well (though I'm not 100% sure they were the same year).

I assume Toyota puts "Uhal-tier" traction control on everything because they know full well their buyers are bottom of the barrel morons who will not live to buy another Toyota if the manufactuer doesn't help save them from themselves.

You guys driving fleet trucks and super base trim stuff that's expected to be sold to fleets are likely similiarly out of luck and stuck with an employee proof tune.

I make a living pushing this tool box on wheels through all conditions to remote oilfield locations. See what’s hanging off the back bumper? Those live there for ease of access when you find yourself stuck. I’ve got 54,000 miles on it already. I burned up the hydraulic pump making the hydroboost and steering fight it out getting unstuck. I had already turned off the T-C and A-T, locker already on before getting stuck, it was still blinking the light and cutting power. It won’t completely cut off like when those things aren’t turned off but it will still tell me no when I give it a command. This is the 9th new work truck I’ve had and only the last three have had this level of nanny control on them.

No, when my traction control kicks in, or if I slip, the light blinks on the dash. This happens when the trailer starts bouncing and the drivetrain gets under heavier load. It’s annoying.

I just placed an order for tube, its up another 16% since last month. That makes it up 61% since November. Diesel is up 63% since last year. Housing market it stupid as well as building supplies. I feel 2007 all over again. Once people have to start paying their rent and mortgages and the Fed starts raising interest rates the boom will be over.

The fed is backed into a corner, crash the economy or let inflation run. Guess what they are choosing to do. :homer:
