What's new

How hard is inflation going to hit, or has hit?

The thing I like about a Fiat currency is it’s an unlimited number and as long as everything keeps going people will have more money if they are able to earn. so it’s an unlimited earning potential and when people have enough money they can tell the government fuck you and I’m seeing that start to happen especially this last year and a half
but I did that and the money I had in the bank now buys something like 1/4 the lumber it did when I quit my job
it still buys about 80% of the rebar and 95% the concrete, though so you know what kinda bunker I'm building lol

I was lucky enough to have bought just about all the lumber I needed for various fixes on my barn last summer....Was putting up new supports in it and noticed that apparently over the winter some of the metal roofing had begun to leak and ruined 2 sheets of the plywood under them. $75 a sheet for plywood and $40 a panel for the metal roofing. Fuck that, I'll buy a gallon of flex-seal and call it good until prices aren't so fucked
check your local lumberyard for the "mis run" list on the roofing steel
you'll often find something that's close enough within a couple months of watching

hell, last year I found the exact amount of steel in the correct color to do one side of my roof, only downer is that it was in 7' sheets, so I've got two lap joints but it was 1.65 a foot instead of the normal 2.50

No trees on your 40 acres? Today I was supposed to pull hipster drool fest barn boards and rusty tin down, nope got stuck doing other stuff instead, dude leveled that bitch with an excavator and stuffed it all in roll off bins :frown: easily a hundred year old barn 453B717F-9D0F-43E6-87B6-CC26DD145815.jpeg

the tin might be worthwhile to sell to stupid shitty hipsters, but fuuuuuck trying to get rotten garbage wood disassembled in saleable condition
Even structural shit like 2x6s are going to be more work than they're worth even in todays lumber market
see my house thread for the barn I've been slowly picking at over the last couple years

trees on my dirt are basically all aspen/poplar, there's a few pines but I'm keeping those motherfuckers until the wind blows them over. I'm also planting as many pines as I can. Loves me some shortleaf pines for making the methheads unable to see my shit from the road
they do this thing where the outside of the tree shrinks a lot more than the inside, so any lumber you cut will be extremely bent when it dries

I'm 50/50 it hit vehicles.

Books have finally caught up and I'm seeing $4k+ more on the same $25k vehicle from 6 months ago.

That being said, I think it's more of a supply issue than inflation issue. Once the semiconductor industry catches up, theres going to be a surplus. Dealerships are being cockbites again and want $5k over msrp on shit like exploders.

I think that it’s punishment for Trump. He kept the Chinese on check. Biden however is getting his 10%.

well yeah, if I had chinese slave labor available to me you think I'd be driving a shovel most days?

I think you misunderstood my post. I dont care if they use of cheap overseas labor, dont care at all. But to jump into the news and virtue signal that your company is a verdant supporter of high minimum wages and all your employees are well paid while offshoring the real labor to china is super hypocritical.

Where are we at on this? China has curtailed domestic speculation and stockpiling commodities, copper pulled back, oil seems stable, housing seems to have flattened, saw an article where purchases of appliances flattened out

Who's looking at price sheets and has up to date info?

Just watched two auctions this morning.

NADA retail = selling price

screw you guys, I'm out. ill go back to speculating in the fall.

There's been cheep beef, like roasts fur $1.97lb on sale, but I think it's due to a different trend, there's droughts, ranchers are taking cattle to auction early, due to shortages of water and grass, so maybe in 6 months, there will be a beef shortage....

I’ve been watching prices since we last discussed it. Yesterday prime cuts were $15.99 a pound at the store(s) I shop at. T-bone, ribeye, strip. Burger was $5+ a pound.

I know you do the higher end stuff, but are you checking Kroger?

This was an anomaly, like fairly short dated frozen 80/20, but it was fucking 97 cents a pound, and there was a literal ton of it, may 27th

I'm wondering if i need to buy a refrigerated truck and start wholesaling beef out of state:laughing:

If you listen to the liberal democrats they will argue that inflation is actually good for the people since we can sell our goods over seas at a better price. They claim its good for the average person in some mythical way.

well, there arent really droughts, or we have been brought out of a very long one with our last 3 months of rain in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska, 5 of the top 6 cattle producing states have gotten kick ass rainfall since April and below seasonal average temps. The cattle on the hoof could not really be doing any better right now.

Some people may have sold some herd coming out of winter, February and March, but i doubt that many. feed lot inventory is up and that means that ranchers are producing.

you're not seeing cheaper beef because of drought and a flood of herd cattle to the market, its because live inventory is high, cattle are producing like they should be and those who would be driven out by feed bills are still in because the grazing is back.

Huh, good info

I saw an article within the past week that stated exactly what I said:homer:
But, I know you're in the business and give weight to your info, I hope you're correct:grinpimp:

Well, what you also have to remember is the price fixing collusion happening with the 4 largest meat Packers and how they are controlling that with foreign beef.

I want beef prices to rise so I can get more for my calves, but we didn't see that during the pandemic. Packers fixed the prices at auctions to scree the producers

it's good for their idea of the average person
because every one of them is a million dollars in debt for fucking retarded reasons, and inflation devalues debt

Yea, between the week of snow (we never get) packing nitrogen in the soil and getting a years worth of rain in 5 months, the cows are FAT down/over here. Maybe a little extra foot rot from not having any dry ground.
