I'm still rocking the stock alcoas on my 97 F350. I like the look, the fact that they're forged and that they're hub centric. I don't like that they are only 7" wide, and that I can't fit bigger brakes.

I've been searching for 17s or 18s, but really don't like any of them.

17.5 alcoa trailer wheels keep coming up :homer:

I've always heard that 16.5s are actually just 16" diameter but with tapered bead area. Is a 17.5 similar? Could you take a hair off the bead with a lathe and mount a 17" tire on like the bros do with 22.5 wheels and 22" tires.

:homer::homer::homer::homer::homer:

Or does anyone know of a decent regular round hole aluminum wheel in a 17 or 18?

Here is the rim profile chart for standard wheels, I don't have the one for fractional wheels.

Could you take the jig that people use to drill UB wheels from 8x170 to 8x6.5, and make your hubs 8x170?

Then slap in a 10.50 rear, even elocker, and run newer wheels.

I'd just go to 99-04 putters at that point. Like someone mentioned in the other thread (maybe you?) F450/550 outters with no adapter should work, have big brakes and be 8x170.

Newer factory wheels would have too much back spacing though.

I've heard ID DOT cops will actually nail people for exceeding gawr and tow ratings though. Which if that's the case, I need to just get a different truck. Rating in 97 weren't much. Even my 8' camper pit me way over all ratings.

I have the 1980-something Tire and Rim Association spec book. I should be able to post up the fractional rim profile when I get home.

I keep searching for 17 or 18 alcoa style wheels without much luck. There was a thread on a random dodge forum that said alcoa was making a 17x9 for 03-07 or whatever dodge trucks, but I can't find anything online. If I leave 18s, I'd like to just go to 18s. Seems there are more options with good wieght capabilities. My buddy just put 12 ply F rated Toyo mt's on his truck in a 35x12.5x18.

Believe it or not, the biggest bro wheel company out there makes the best looking wheel

Don't really want 19.5s or 20x10s. I'd think about the 20s, but also don't want the fake big rig lug nuts.

that's exactly what the lowrider guys do to run rubber band car tires on semi wheels

..... Like the bros do with 22.5 wheels and 22" tires......

You don't say? :flipoff2:

Id bet with the capacity of a 22.5/24.5 wheel, there is enough material that it's probably totally safe. I'd bet it's not very much at, probably just squaring the bead surface up.

Maybe I should look for some super single 22.5s? :flipoff2:

I’ve always liked the look of Mickey Thompson classic 2’s. They look great on an obs

fuck it, what's so bad about just running 17.5 trailer tires?

There is actually such thing as 17.5 truck tires, although I can't find much on them at all. I'd also like a little more diameter than a 215/70r17.5 for gearing and so I don't get high centered on my driveway breakover with my cclb.

If I were to put stiff tractionless tires on it, I'd just go 19.5s.

well yeah, iirc chevy used them from like the '50s into the '70s
you won't find many options like 19.5s though

they're only stiff and tractionless if they're steel sidewalls like basically all 19.5s and bigger

The 22.5 is a ~15k rim and the vehicles they're turning it for weigh maybe 6k all together.

You're asking about removing material from a 17.5 that will be used near capacity when you're done. That's a whole different ball game.

It might work. It might not.

But you can just put 8x6.5 centers in some 22.5s and run takeoffs if you don't mind the tire being tall.

Ya, I realize that. It was more of a "what if"

Even though the 17.5s should be rated for ~6k lbs, they probably don't have enough material right at the lip to do it.

Like I said, I'd just go to 19.5s if I were to leave LT tires.

fwiw ive only had my hands on 2 sets of 17.5 rims but i would guess most 17.5 trailer rims are only 7" wide too

Ya, that's another downside. I'd probably just run 285/75r17s if I did it.

Looking at load index's, 18s seem to be ideal. They have the most options for tires with a 128+(~3975 lb) load index.

I think I read somewhere that the ram 1500 mega cabs had forged 8x6.5BP 17x8's vs the normal 2500-3500's cast 8x6.5BP 17x8's. Not sure if that would be option worth looking at if you don't like the wheels anyhow but the comment about dodge wheels with centers bored out reminded me of it.

The 1500 mega cabs are definitely 8 lug, being forged and the 1 ton diesel being cast wouldn't make sense, but who knows.

Like I said, all the newer stuff is really deep back spacing. 05+ axle is about 4" wider and has the same track width.
