How close can wheel studs be to the edge of a unit bearing

I would like to Drill a new bolt pattern in my unit bearings but the new holes would be very close to the edge, maybe even overlapping the edge.

This is a trail only rig, am I going to kill a bus load of nuns?

Not a fan of that close. Most people, like me, say half the thickness of the stud to the edge. Others say all of it, like your current wheel bearing is.

Can you put a flange on it?

What the unit bearing is from and its bolt pattern? And what pattern you’re going after?
It’s a regular 5x4.5 tj dana 30 unit bearing. My wheels are 5x5.5 and I have 1.25in adapters. But it would be nice to lose some scrub radius

What is the pattern already in the spacer? Looks almost like it has two separate bolt patterns?
Or are you trying to get rid of the spacer and go directly to the unit bearing?

Make a couple spares and run it. They are going to crack eventually, just be prepared.

Lets use logic shall we....

Where is the path of torque that bears upon the wheel studs or from the wheel studs to the wheel ?

Its in a circle yes ?

Not from center out or outside toward center.

So with this in mind not as critical as you rock crawlers might have thought aye.

Is there really no 5x5.5 UB that works on a TJ knuckle? I've searched before, but usually just come up with $$ free spin kits.

Anyone compare the 94-0? 1500 ram UB to a TJ?

Wj is 5x5, maybe that would give you a little more meat around the flange?

I've thought about making ~1/2" thick steel adapters for something similar. I pictured using countersunk Allen's for the old pattern going in with nuts on the back, or possibly thread the UB? The new pattern would probably just be threaded studs.

Kinda a pain just for 3/4" difference though.

Do you really have that great of wheels to justify the effort? Could always pick up some cheap basset beadlocks in 5x4.5.

Really though, I'd think about switching to a SxS bolt pattern, beadlocks are cheap for those things.

I’ve got more time to spend than money on this thing, so If it would help I could see redrilling the unit bearing. But otherwise I will just keep the spacers and live with the tire rub for now.

I believe the wj brakes require 16in wheels and I have 15s

News wheels are the best answer.

Knock studs out your wheel spacers, put back on unit bearings & use it as a template, transfer punch the 5x5.5 wbp. Press studs out of unit bearings. Drill, press studs into new location and try it.

I have WJ knuckles with 15x8 steel wheels on my XJ. Steering and brakes offered by a WJ knuckle swap is totally worth it.

Tons of FWD car shit runs the studs damn close to the edge like that without issue. Spindle studs are usually so close to the edge that the head is clearanced. Send it. You'll be fine.

I believe that 94+ ram 1500 and 88-98 Chevy/gmc 1500 unit bearings will bolt on to Dana 30 knuckles, giving you 5x5.5 and 6x5.5 options.
