YES, I have searched!!

I really don't know much about GPS units other than using my phone to pull up a Google map, which I use often. This got me around for about 3000 miles through california and Oregon without issue and countless other trips.

However, Google loses its luster when getting off any major roads.

I am planning another trip to Utah over Thanksgiving week in the van and looking for maps that will give me better alternative route options for someone not local. For example, I stumbled on a road called Burr Trail before my last trip and it was an amazing day venturing across the state on this road. Google didn't have it. Stuff like that.

Anyone have good places to find maps like this?

Pick your favorite state.

ONX is worth the price of admission in my experience, Pretty cheap to keep yourself from getting lost.

Otherwise Jackie's suggestion is pretty good, but also not free.

Where in Utah are you going to? Highway 50 runs all the way across Nevada and into Utah through some small towns with some interesting (historical) stops. Connect to Utah below Provo in an area called Delta, UT.

I use maps.me for point to point mapping on a tablet in the truck. It has a lot of roads on it but does not designate public/private. I usually preplan a route using on-x. I have the off road version so it also has some routes already marked. I then transition that chosen route to maps.me. And use it to navigate point to point. You can download 10 maps on the free version.
It’s not an all in one solution, but works decent.

OnX for a pay ap.

Avenza Maps is free and you can download almost any BLM or government topo map. I use it when off road for reference, but have paper maps for backup.

Avenza is the only one I use. It is cool to be able to download old USGS Topo maps that have different details/info

This is my usual process as well cheap samsung tablet maps.me. And then on-x for my phone. I like to be able to run them side by side to get a better idea.

Yeah I love Avenza, i used a 1950’s Topo to find a partially constructed railroad bed way up in the woods completely forgotten.

depending on where I am going
I will use what is available on the internets to print
I always have my Gazetter

other than that I do what god intended and go discover the (whatever it is) the old fashioned way by just getting out there

Only thing I don’t like about Avenza is you have to load every map as you drive off them. The maps.me lets you download the entire state and you can zoom in for more detail. It will follow your progress on screen (map scrolls). I just used it for Baja and it had roads we were using as race course on it. But I also used it to map a route to Yuma from Ensenada to pick up to tow rig just by scrolling out. It’s a little quirky sometimes, but super easy to use once you figure out the basics.

maveric yeah with Avenza you have to do a lot of homework and make sure you download every possible map you might need if you're going to be covering a large area on a trip. I'm more of a day tripper than overlander so avenza is still pretty good for me

Watch out on OnX. It is permeated with private trails and roads. Closed roads. Some are clearly identified as legit USFS or BLM but many are trespassing hacks.
