Got a truck at work that we bought used that came with a warn 30285 hydraulic driven off the PTO. PTO pump is making terrible sounds and local shop is quoting me $4000 to replace so currently have it removed and installed a block off plate. Wondering if it would be more cost effective to go with a 10 or 15 gpm 12v electric pump. The truck already has the reservoir. And it would only be used for pulling broken trucks onto trailers. This is on a 2016 Ford F450.

Thoughts anyone?

Whats the part number of the pump? Rebuild it.

Or take it to a hydro shop and have them rebuild it.

It better be some whizz bang nasa engineered space age alloy pump with an integrated ass scratcher for $4k.
So it has the 6R140 Trans with a Muncie FR66 PTO with a Muncie PFA-714-16QSRLX

Just got off the phone and they rebuilt the pump but the think the noise is from the FR66 unit. The tried shimming it multiple ways and the noise stayed. The gears on the unit look perfect but who knows. Maybe the FR66 is rebuildable.

Find a pump on surplus center that has the right shaft and mount pattern and is kinda sorta in the same GPM ballpark.

pto pump is probably a standard SAE flange and spline
take measurements and buy a chinkanese one on ebay like you were going to be sold for a 1000% markup

that would be really slow though
Plenty of wonton dump bodies are done that way. No idea what kind of flow the winch demands.

OP needs to post up the data plate from the pump he pulled off.

It is, I found a parts diagram for it. Couple bearings, some clutch discs, and a planetary.

Are they shotgunning? Seems like they would remove the pump, run it to see if the noise remained, in order to isolate the source of the noise. Hell, it could be coming from the damn transmission. Make them isolate the source of the noise first before ordering more parts. Now you got a rebuilt pump that was fine. Whos on the hook for the cost of that? Pressure testing the damn thing, or even going at it with a stethoscope should have revealed the pump was fine.

Its a pdf, not some virus. Itll ask you to download. :homer:

Thanks for all the input. Will start digging into it some more. It could be the gear rattle as that is pretty much how the sound was. The shop that looked at it swore something was major wrong and the transmission would grenade if we did not pull the pto off.

7.14 GPM @ 1000RPM with max 2900 PSI. Maxes out at 2500RPM

Thinking it is less the pump and more the PTO
