How much money are my ears worth and what should i be looking at buying?

Ive grown up never once wearing ear protection shooting and scared myself pretty good a few months back with my ears ringing for 2 days.

Who makes a good mid range priced product that i should only need to buy once?

geez dude. Tried rolled up kleenex? :flipoff2:

I guess I'm OCD on hearing and wear muff or plugs 90% of the time in the shop or yard and always when shooting. keep what I have if at all possible.

I'd love some great active tech protection, just haven't spent time looking yet.

I'm a firm believer in molded plugs, like these. I have never used that particular one though

It seems like I have one of every electronic ear protection, as well as the Surefire plugs and, some mold them at home types. Like Rockmup said, a custom molded set is best and even then it might not be enough. My current favorite for rifle shooting is one foamy in my cheek weld ear in case the seal of the electronic ear pro gets knocked loose, and Walker razors.

In winter I can use my Peltor 500's with the gel ear pads, but once it warms up they make my head sweat.

I have hearing loss from not wearing hearing protection as a kid/young adult. I'm trying to save what I have left. I coach kids shotgun 4 days a week and I shoot myself another 1 or2. So a fair amount. I need to be able to hear little kids and at the same time protect my ears. This has been a challenge until 3 years ago. At SCTP nationals I ran into an audiologist Dr. who had a new product. It was basically a hearing aid that stopped harmful sounds from coming in. He let me take a set out for a round of sporting clays. I was sold, He can even tune them for my hearing loss. I can hear people talk now with them in and people say I'm quieter when I wear them LOL. They can also be tuned to bring in certain sound frequencies for hunting. The have been good for me. Look up TETRA Hearing. They are pricey but I got lucky because they give a $300 discount to shooting sports kids and coaches.

I use the squishy orange foam ones to great effect. I only wear the headset construction type for, well, construction/grinding/cutting as they interfere with any necessary cheek weld.

Jewels and I each have a pair of these:

They're pretty amazing, I hear better with them on than without. If we're shooting at 100 yards, one of us can go to the target while the other is at the bench and have a normal conversation without yelling.

I've got a cousin who works in our state Game & Fish Commission's shooting sports program. I've got 2x pair of Do-All Earshield electronic muffs he gave me a year or so ago. Apparently they're what they all use, but I haven't tried them yet.

I use these:

Otto Noise Barrier

The sub $100 peltors worked great but I didn't like how muffs fit with a hat and the cheek weld would move them sometimes.

The only issue I've had with the Otto's is the foam plug wore out and started letting sound in. That happened after wearing them for maybe 230-250 hours. Replacement foams were easy to find.

I use these and I really like them. You can still bullshit with your buddies without taking them off. Your ears are probaly worth $50.

I have a bag of disposable plugs I donate them to folks that don't have something when I'm shooting. Also have 2 pair of muffs for the wife and I to use. Been thinking about getting a set of electronic...just never got around to pulling the trigger on them.

I'm using the Surefire Sonic Defenders Ultra EP10 and really like them. Light weight, comfortable, good price and 30db noise reduction.

I wear foam ear plugs with cheap ear muffs over them anytime using the chainsaw, grinder, guns, etc. Harbor freight ear muffs are comfy and I use the 3M orange ear plugs from homo depot

My dad is almost deaf and I hate having to yell during conversations with him, so I'm trying to avoid that for myself
This. Plugs and muffs anytime I am doing or around something loud. I know some damage has already been done from when I was young and dumb.

I use the "in the ear" Walker noise cancelling ear plugs. They allow you to hear and even magnify surrounding sounds when wearing them and then cancel noise when you pull the trigger. The only time I don't like them is in heavy wind.

.

I’m 31 and have awful tenitis from shooting with a muzzle break open 20 times with no ear protection when I was 16-17 which has lead to bouts of vertigo and I assure you that shits no fun . Any ear protection is better than none I have no issue with the foam kind even but I love the electronic noise cancelling ones . You will love the ones you ended up with .

Let us know if you have any cheek weld issues. They look very slender.

X2 on the Howard Leight's. Have had a couple pairs for years now, first pair got stolen god knows when.

Well no one was home so i popped the batteries in them, put them on, and stomed around the house yelling and clapping.
I honestly had no idea how these electronic things could possibly work... pretty impressive.

Ive also never been to a shooting range but dont want to put my neighbors through 50-100rnds of 357 so im headed out to one at a county park tommorow. Will report back after using them for actual gun fire

Did the exact same thing but got interrupted by a "what the fuck are doing?" when the girl friend came home.

Figured I'd add to this thread instead of starting a new one.

Any real world experience with the axil/sig Bluetooth, hearing enhancers, earpro? I spend a good amount of time with something in my ears, between chore work, shooting, and trying to workout. If these are all they're supposed to be, they could be nice.

I have the Axil GS, not the 2.0. Tried them because of cheek weld issues on my bolt actions. The set I have only came with 2 set of foam ear pieces. one is too big and the other too small lol. They do work but I am going to look for something else I think. the wires dangling under your chin were an issue for me also. snagged the them out of my ears a few times.

Hope this helps.

cheap squishy ear plugs > all else

that said, any pair of cheap muffs are usually good enough and pretty convenient though they absolutely don't work with some rifles' stocks

fuck too late lol
your neighbors won't mind a hundred rounds of 357 if you bumpfire a few mags from anything rifle caliber with a short barrel first

ETA: fuck too late for that too
how was your range trip? get shot by any idiots fumbling around with new to them guns?

These + the gel ear pads are the best I've found for all day comfort and usability. I leave them turned off a lot. Hard for me to concentrate, being able to hear everyone talking.

I just got the Axil GS 2.0 GS Extreme 2.0 – AXIL

Not enough time on them to comment yet. You have to use the foam tips to get the higher db rating, and they are just a bit fidgity to get on. Only have tried a handful of times, so maybe I'll get it down. Already want to explore if it's possible for these to work with a custom earpiece.

I have been using the Axil GS 2.0 for a couple months now and they are working pretty good. More comfortable than over the ear stuff for all day use, especially when it's warm out. I can make it through a full match day with both enhancement turned on and BT audio going and they recharge in under two hours on the drive home.

Even RO'ing open guns under a metal overhang is tolerable when using the foamies. The audio enhancement does make the human voice sound a little off when people are talking but its not bad. I'd buy them again, especially if you can get them in a discount situation.
