With Trump in the news coming down with COVID-19, there's yet another thing that makes me feel like I'm taking crazy pills this year: Trump has had several "Treatments" for the virus. I am nowhere near a doctor, but I thought conventional wisdom was there is no real way to "treat" a virus. When people get things like the flu or a cold, you pretty much just hunker down, get rest, stay hydrated, take vitamin C to help your immune system, etc. I would imagine that our president is getting the best possible medical care our country can provide, so I'm guessing those that are treating him with remdesivir and dexamethasone know what they're doing. I wonder if this will change the way we treat viruses in the future.

Maybe, but I bet that the long term side effects are worse than 99.9% of the viruses that we are likely to catch. You can kick a cold in 2-3 days with some nyquil.

On the day to day, doctors are just treating symptoms like they always have done and the patients ride it out.

They're not "treating the virus". What the doctors are doing is treating the symptoms and supporting the body, such as oxygen and steroids to keep the patient's system strong so the body itself can fight the virus.

my cynical self believes that in the future, we'll see more and more shut downs for our safety... And some will demand it, while others will want to stand up against it... the second group will be vilified by the first group.

And Walla! socialism

They've been treating HIV, herpes, and a pile of other viruses for decades now. There are plenty of ways to treat them and lessen their effects, but no cures like antibiotics for bacteria. We can slow down reproduction in some viruses but there's no real way to kill them since they aren't really alive in the first place.
