H1 portal kit beside JHF

That thing is wicked. It’s odd to me that 74weld makes so many drastically different portals. That has to be partly why they are so expensive, each pair seems to be different.

I thought that too, but they're probably pretty much made to order, so it's probably not a huge deal to just type in a different program for the inner housing.

2big bronco would you keep the 37s or bump up to 39-40s? Having seen a few of their JL/JT's at Trail Hero, I really like the idea of a stockish looking rig with portals slapped on. :smokin:

Yall need to donate money to my channel so I can afford these builds :flipoff2:

Id stay 37s and possible drop the 2" lift off of it that I have. Basically run it stock with rcvs the steering upgrades and portals.

Why does everyone think portals are going to be the ultimate upgrade to an otherwise stock suspension? I get that they give you a ton of extra ground clearance vs stock but it also raises you CoG by the same amount yet gives you zero extra flex because they are bolted to an otherwise stock suspension. I'd personally rather be lifting tires with a lower CoG or figure out a way to get more travel.

In my opinion portal boxes are the last thing you bolt onto an already well refined suspension to squeeze that much extra performance out of it, or something you start from scratch with and build around to fully utilize there capability.

Yes, he sold it last year. Looks like the new owner might be a bit more serious about competing with it.

You mean he's not running huge plate steel bumpers and a roof top tent?

Would be sweet. How do you think the gearing would end up with staying with the same size tires but the 1.2 or whatever reduction?

Im thinking it would be probably perfect seeing as how I didnt touch the gearing going from 33s to 37s. With the 7spd manual I pretty much cant use 7th now.... but I also dont feel like I need lower gearing taking off.

The main goal for this truck has always been reliability and I think taking the load off the axles as well as having to beat on it less due to increase ground clearance would be sweet.
The way I see it is if Id have to beat on it at all with lockers, portals, 37s, and the 3-1 tcase then Im definitely in a situation I shouldnt be in in the first place with my family rig.

With portals you can keep the stock suspension geometry, put on bigger tires without getting problems with cv joints etc and have much less stress on the axle shafts and diffs.

I think it depends on terrain, Boulder type crawling, I think clearance wins. 75% of the time you're hung up is on your diffs, especially with 37s or smaller. Snow and muddy ruts they would be a huge advantage also.

Remember the old crawl magazine with a mild TJ and fj80 on portals? Just seemed like sleepers.

Other than that for overall performance I think you're right I kind of mentioned that earlier.

In the case of the bronco I think it is the best upgrade for the price. The stock suspension on my badlands model works awsome and I dont want more travel. I would however prefer it to be 2-3" over stock... which is why I am just running 2" strut spacers.

The biggest downfalls of the bronco are steering geometry, cv angle when you lift it, and dana44 sized differentials which are only bairly adequate on 37s. Running portals adresses all of those issues and compensates for gearing. Mine has 4.70s stock and running portals would bump me up to an efective 5.70ish... which would be just lower then stock on 37s.

As far as a higher cog the only difference is (on the bronco) is going to be the weight of the rear 44 going up 3" which on an otherwise unlifted truck seems like a fair compromise for having 3 more inches ground clearance under the axle.

Its also possible im trying really hard to justify the price in my head so I can be one of the cool guys with portals :shrugs:

Doesn't everything go up 3"?

I think the selling point for most is that ability to retain the stock suspension geometry and steering geometry. While it won't offer any more travel, the portals don't have any of the negative side effects of most of the bolt on lift kits and little to no fabrication like the long arm kits sometimes require. On top of that I think the portals increase track width a bit coupled with the larger/wider tire that would help to negate the higher CG issue. On top of that IFS has the issue of very limited travel due to CV angles and unless you drop the diff, make the track width really wide, or go to portals you can't get around that. Then there are all the obvious clearance and gearing advantages of the portal.
