I picked up a fairly new, but horrendously abused chinese 4 wheeler for $20 a couple weeks ago and am trying to decide what to do with it. It's an "ATI thrasher" that is in relatively good shape aside from the engine missing stuff, and possibly having a bad transmission. Seller said the transmission was bad, but I don't know how he would have tested it since it can't be started. The trans works fine by hand. I kind of want to get it running for a yard toy, but not really wanting to spend the money on a new engine ($450ish). The engine stock is EFI, but someone trashed the TB and has a chinese vm22 in it's place. Missing the ECU so obviously no spark and it seems like it has a different ignition pickup than the carbed units. I'm wondering if I could buy the $40 stator+cdi+pickup+wiring harness kits on ebay and get it to run carbed. I know nothing about these aside from they seemed to be owned by the absolute bottom of civilization.
Any input?

This is pretty much the engine that's in it now. GY6 engine with CVT, then at the output they put a F-N-R gearbox that drives a sprocket where the scooter wheel would be. They use them in gocarts a lot. Typically 150cc, but the one in this atv is 170cc, guessing bored.

And I'm not opposed to a predetor and comet CVT setup, but the sprocket drives on the other side and it's not as trivial as you'd want to flip the axle so there would be some fab work required. Also wouldn't have electric start or reverse, not sure how important that is in an atv. I'm a 2/3 wheeler person.

If it’s 170cc might be B block, smaller from factory probably A block. Difference is jug/head stud spacing.

whats the stamping ID on the aide of he case near the dip stick?
Where?

After looking at the later pictures, that is straight up standard GY6 scooter shit. If it has compression, the bundle that has a brain and can reference whatever crank trigger you need for timing should definitely work, spend it and send it

Thanks! Why do you know these?

I just ordered this:

Wow that is a lot of parts for the $
Should I get a flywheel puller? Do you think the flywheel I have will work?

Polaris razor 170 and then my son’s tinkering with scooters. I was very drunk when I made that post as well but still sure looks like something that should work easily. I put a completely separate brain and injection system on his razor at one point. Seems like I made a flywheel puller

Getting this together and hit a snag. The ebay shroud kit for a 150cc gy6 isn't right. It's like its for a 3/4" shorter cylinder. I can hack it up, but it would be cool to have somethong that just bolts on. Any tips? Seller was no help.

that could be a whole forum section

I got something similar to that to fix up for nieces. Haven’t touched it yet but it’s time to get going on it. Has forward/reverse is all I care about.

Did you get the quad issue sorted out or still fiddling with the shroud bits? I’ve never put hands on a GY6.

I found the correct shroud kit for the K block online, but it was going to run $50 or so with shipping so I'm going to hack up this one and make it longer.

Thanks for the reminder, I forgot about my 4 wheeler GY6, going to ex wife's barn to pull it and bring to my house. Nice little retirement project.

You got started on this one yet?
Shoot, forgot to update. Got it running the same day I brought it home. Cleaned carb, fixed some wiring hacks, bought a new air filter and starter, changed the oil, filled the tires with slime, and have been driving the heck out of it.
The axle moves back and forth in the bearings a bit when doing donuts which is holding up getting the brakes working, that's the next step.
It's WAY more fun than I expected. The suspension, while limited, makes it much nicer than any gocart I was ever involved with as a kid. The GY6+FNR trans setup is a perfect powertrain for it. It's faster than you'd expect for how slow it is. It has longer legs than you'd expect, probably tops out at around 40. Too fast for my kids to be left alone on it yet, especially without brakes, but we're getting there. I wish it had some kind of speed governor. Limiting the throttle position doesn't really do what you'd want.

Right. With the cvt it’ll still have the long legs. Rev limiting it would only slow acceleration for the most part. That’s cool that it was that easy to get going again. The one I gathered up looks to have some electrical hackery I’m not looking forward to messing with.

Quad is also running now. Only issue is that I only have one battery that fits both the gocart and quad battery boxes so I can only run one at a time, planning to make a box for the cart that fits the $25 walmart mower battery. I did end up ordering a new flywheel that fits the 11 coil stator setup. While the stator plugs into the ebay harness/electronics kit, it's only using part of the stator's potential so I will rewire it to use a regulator with 3 wire input to get more charging power. I also hacked a predator 212 gas tank into place with some p-clamps and it works great. I don't have any lights working yet, so it's not an issue yet.
I also learned that there are DC or AC fed CDI setups and the AC fed ones have a VERY weak spark, but seem to work fine. 'They' say the DC CDI's get you better idle, so I could convert the quad to DC CDI some day. The cart is already DC and runs great. Both use the same flywheel/stator combo (6 and 11 pole CDI's have different flywheel ID's BTW) but the single CDI coil goes unused with DC.

Consider just buying the ebay kit like I did for the quad if it's too hacked. It's so cheap.
Start by figuring out if the CDI is AC or DC fed, that's where the PO goofed on mine and couldn't get it running. Didn't realize the CDI needed 12v.

I’ve never touched a GY6. Electrically it seems more complicated than it needs to be but that’s probably partly why a 150 cc puts out more power than a predator 212

Holy shit, all of that for less than $50 bucks shipped? I need to do a compression test on this one first to make sure it’s worth messing with
