My kid is getting in to riding BMX and I'd like to ride with him. Not on the track, just for fun. I miss the good old days on my BMX bike. What should I look for? Don't want to spend a ton if I don't need to.

And when you become a real grown up you get yourself one of these:

Oset 24

Or go to a bike shop and pedal a few around. They should have something in the $2-350 range that will be fine. I still ride my 20"

I too have been contemplating this. I still ride my 20" Dyno Compe that I got for my 12th bday, I'm 39 now. So it's not near as cool or comfortable as it was 27 years ago. Here is a link to what I'm looking at getting, but the problem is finding one in stock somewhere these days.

Corona has thrown the bike market for a loop. The used market doesn't exist and the new market is also super thin

Yep, I've noticed that as well. It's crazy how much stuff this damn virus has messed up.

if you are looking into the 26” stuff the term your are looking for is ‘dirtjumper’

I had the same idea, chase my 6 year old around on his BMX. I ended up on a specialized p2, basically a 26" wheel dirt jumper. Sprung forks, hard tail, single speed and rear brakes only. They have a sloped top tube for a low seat compared to their hard tails. They are built to be abused. I really liked it, got it for like $250 used. I lost it in the fire and really want another, but haven't found one yet, and haven't came to spending ~$1k for a new equivalent.

This. I am looking for a road/hybrid bike to take to work. New, there is nothing available under 2 grand until november. Used is all trashed old shit that someone wants top dollar for.

I've thought about putting my niner downhill up for more than I paid for it, but damn do I love it even if I dont ride it enough anymore.

I think a dirt jumper is the right call. Just revived this one from the dead to play around at the dirt jumps and skate park. Soul Cycles Titan. Just converted it to a single speed and replaced brakes F/R since this photo.

This is a kink drifter 26" its super comfortable to ride sizewise. Seat fawking sucks and brakes suck for my 220 ass. Could be just the pads
I think its full cromo and was lie $475

Same bike I have. Loved it when I bought it and still like it. I do wise I could trade for a small frame version but they don't show up ever much less someone wanting to trade one. Mine is a 7 spped but just a single front sprocket.

I have an old Azonic Steelhead I'd let go for a couple hundred if your interested. I *think* it needs bars and a brake but otherwise its good. I'd have to check it over and see what it actually needs first though.

I just recently sold off my 1995 Redline Proline 20" I bought a SE Racing 24" back in 12 and last year bought a 2019 GT Performer 29" I would say stick to 26" or 29" they ride like cruisers but you can still have fun on them if you feel like hurting yourself.. :homer:

I have a Sunday model C. Fairly comfortable for me at 6', 180.

SE bikes are awesome. Period.

While the Big Ripper is bad ass.... get on an OM DURO (The OM literally stands for Old Man) I can't recommend that bike enough. Feels like you are on a MUCH smaller bike.

I am going to buy one in the next few weeks..

You guys aren't lying about the prices right now. Holy shit. They're going used for almost double MSRP. I did find a nice GT Pro Series LTD in my town with a bunch of upgrades for $850. Might go that route.

$850, damn.
I'm still rocking a late 90's 24" Mongoose cruiser. Raced ABA as a kid, never grew up or got into $10k bikes with shocks, gears.

What exactly is a dirt jumper?

edit: I suppose I could google it but I'd rather have you spoon feed me the info. :flipoff2:

Mountain bikers were mountain biking, until some of them got the idea to take theirs off some vert bmx style jumps. Then they started building 26" mountain bikes that had better geometry for tricks and jumps.

They're usually an overgrown 26" bmx bike with a really short and stiff travel front fork, and a slammed seat. They're fun to take off jumps or ride pump tracks, or even at the bmx track, but not that great for long rides because of their shorter wheelbase and low seat height. For a long time a beater one was super affordable... <$1,000 but the whole COVID thing has messed up bike prices.

Here's a blkmrkt Riot I built up back when I didn't mind hitting the deck off of big jumps as much as I do now:

If you can find a blkmrkt brand bike, they're the perfect DJ geometry in my opinion. The blkmrkt mob was a US hand made chromoly frame, the blkmrkt Riot was a Taiwan made aluminum frame with the same geometry as the mob. Can't really go wrong with either.

Thanks for the tip, that looks close enough to what I had.

If you want a real bmx bike I would get the best Sunday complete I was willing to pay for at least model with a full chromoly frame. I have 2. If not, I like the SE racing big bikes others have commented on. I would not want to take bigger than 20 inch wheels to a skate park.
