Is there a good aluminum cleaner that doesn’t leave the aluminum chalky? I’ve used oven cleaner and purple power, they both clean great but leave it with white spots and chalky spots. This is on oil pans and timing covers and other bits that I was planning on leaving bare aluminum

You probably need a two-step process. Most of the AL friendly cleaners won't cut oil and grease well. Clean with the good stuff and then neutralize with something else.

I have worked in facilities that fabricated high grade aluminum stuffs

first
degreaser....hot degreaser

then
it goes into the etch (acid)

A guy on here turned me on to this stuff for the parts washer that is aluminum safe.

It does not dissolve grease like a solvent but it does clean very well. I cleaned some aluminum CJ selectable hubs and they came out looking new.

My hands are really sensitive to solvents, acetone will leave me cracked and bleeding and this stuff actually leaves my hands feeling better.

If you have it in a spray bottle you can always put the bottle in a pan and run hot water around it, heat always helps.

I use Shout laundry spray on my dirtbikes because it's anodized Al safe, but probably not the best heavy degreaser. Might be worth trying if you already have some in the laundry room (It's actually a pretty good household general cleaner, I'm not sure how they only market it as laundry cleaner).

If you're trying to make those parts look super nice, check out wet/vapor blasting:

Eagle One mag wheel cleaner in the purple bottle is what I usually use but any acid based "brightener" does the same.

really ?

that doesn't sound like a great idea. i imagine it would damage the aluminum. but have never tried it
It's almost the same as hydrochloric acid. Not as strong cause it has impurities.

We spray it on,let it sit for a few minuted, then rinse.

If you want it white, muriatic acid.
We use it to clean condenser coils.

Hope you rinse REALLY well. MA eats aluminum. I've used it to clean up melted piston material from jetski cylinders.

HVAC guys have something called Coil Cleaner. Instead of an acid it is a base. Comes in concentrate and can be diluted to desired strength. I used some on some small parts last winter. It got stuff back to new looking after 10-15 minutes of soaking. It did not turn them white like acid cleaners often do. Supposedly if you mix it too strong it will, but my stuff came out shiny like new.
