Going Solo - an X3 to race

The first race series schedule is set as an irate4x4 race car! It’s the oldest/original off road race series in the US, Line Mountain, and where I started.

May 1, June 12, Sept 18. Very competitive and where the current KOH king came up. Looking forward to it.

I'll see ya there, although mine is in 4x4 'B' class. :grinpimp:

Do we have any other Line Mtn guys on here?

We must. I’ll be there if you need anything, I know how to patch a race car and fast if needed. UTV s run early and I might need a hand, who knows at line.

Awesome!!

The front is essentially done besides putting the plastics back on. It has;
9 added gussets
CT race works - A Arms, race bumper
Keller ball joints
Warn 4500S
axle splines slathered in never seize
greases I joints
double shear shock tower
it just needs some plastic

The rear,

I pulled the plastics, exhaust, and some coolant wiring.

left to do;
rear gussets
add lower frame tubing
add anti-submarine harness tab
drill out 65 rivets, remove skid, tap 65 holes with 1/4 -20
Remove trailing arms and gusset
fab up new exhaust
set upper cage on
mount radiator then plumb
Mount...
-pumper
-siren
-fire ext
-fire suppression system
-race coms/radio
Paint cage
Add metal doors
install Factory UTV Skid
put select plastic on
and I’m considering a 2 sub, 4 speaker stereo just because

In the pics above you can see there was a shroud around the inner cooler and intake. I had to keep the intake part but remove the part that holds the inner cooler. The innercooler will now be attached to the rear section of the cage and the plastic will be in the way.

I put 12-13 hours in Sat. I will upload some pics any try to explain where we are at.

-I drilled out 40-50 rivets because BRP rivets everything on, including the skid.
- next step is to 1/4=20 tap all of the 13/64ths holes. it will be a pain but its most the panels.

We then decided to remove the floors so I could weld V shaped tubes in the chassis for more strength. I laid some nice beads up top but I cannot weld upside down for the live of me. They are like half welded tubes.

The cage was test fit and all of the bolt holes line up. I will be bolting this cage on. We did verify and the windows are unusably small. The guys at No Limit R&D must be 5' 100 lbers. I need to cut the doors and make new window nets.

The 2017 chassis got demoted and is raw in a snow pile. It was in my way. I'm about $3k into it and might scrap it. racing.....

I mocked up and welded on the radiator tabs, found a spot for the pumper under the dash, etc.

I’m painting now. All the little things I welded on or cut off. The added tubes, cut door latches and hinges, etc.

sorry for the double pics. I cannot manage to upload and select the right pics in the right order.

Pumper mounted and hoses run. I ran them where a stock machine has coolant lines to the front rad.

Building some booger welded tree kickers. I welded a nut in so they are removable. Need clean up work.

I pulled so hard on the stock wheel it was bending the chassis like a taco. I tired 3 pullers but the factory plastic wheel just peeled. I broke a ratchet strap tightening it so much.
finally with two bigger ratchet straps and 10 min with a 2.5lb hammer it came off. My power steering unit is probably fucked. I beat the piss out of the shaft after 2 hours of failing to remove it the right way. I really should order a new power steering unit now.

That’s a Hess quick release and wheel

I like your progress and sharing what's going on. I'm UTV illiterate and learning a lot. Thanks !

Any plans to add a reinforcement here ? I couldn't help but notice the unsupported tube.

It is designed like that because it gives you the option to boat side it for a rock racer. With minimal work you can cut the lower chassis tube out and use the upper tube as the bottom.

That said, you bring up a good point. I am trying not to add much more metal but.... I might take your advice, its only a little weight. It is kind of a dead node the way it sits. I made a note on the white board to take a good look at adding 3" of tube there.

Edit, looking at it more, adding that tube will also support my seats from moving in a hard impact. seat tabs are on the upper cross tube.

Looking good!

Let me know your thoughts on the Hess quick release when you get it installed. I have one on my car and im not sure how I feel about it yet. Its not as tight fitting as I had expected.

I would definitely add a tube there. Its minimal weight in the grand scheme of things.

Using these to mount the siren control and race radio on the roof bar.

Trying a wireless camera for full time rear view. Rated to 60’ I need 6’ so I hope it’s a strong steady signal.

Finally these gems. Can am leaves an ignition on daisy chain plug for accessories. It’s under the dash, ready to roll. You can chain 4 of these together so each can be run to switches or the low voltage ignition on needs of accessories. Just keep adding them within reason to get power.

Maybe I missed it somewhere, and am new to sxs, but what width did you end up with? I assume not super wide since you're racing in the woods.

Old plumbing out, new plumbing in.

im not going to finish these lines or secure them until the cage is on. Just mocking up the routing. I’ll cut them doe , clean them up after cage is in place. I’ll probably secure some of these to the tire carrier.
