In the Aerostar the shifter hole is by my knee and the output is near my ass. In the Ranger it's even further forward. 4spd is even shorter. I bet the U joint is damn close to the front leaf spring mount.
I'm not a fan of the body work but that build looks like fun.

winch in the trunk on a car would be kinda funny. Just bolt it to the top of the "frame" hitch receiver style, run a couple braces to the strut towers to distribute some of the load.
Would be hilarious to get your shit stuck then hop out, pop the trunk and unspool a cable.
