Setting up used front gears.

Came out of an 99-04

Going into a 05+

5.38s

Set up with the original 4.10 shim under the pinion head. (orig gears from the 05+ housing.)

Backlash right now 8-10 thou.

Should I add or remove shim under pinion head?

Shaved 5.38s for Dana 60 front.

Thanks for any advice.

no expert here. but to me that pattern looks pretty ok, especially for used gears. you could try changing the pinion shims. not sure how much better you will get. that looks like a lot of the "Acceptable" patterns you see in books/online. again. just my .02

We ended up taking 10 thou out from under the pinion head. And it looks better ended with 7 thou BL. It's a front so she'll fly.

Honestly those patterns aren't bad, especially for used gears. The concave side shows a little deep, but the convex side shows pretty balanced pinion depth. If you pulled .010 out after these pics, I would guess it's a decent bit shallow now

No surprisingly drive side stayed pretty much the same just further toward the the outside. The coast side came up and got rid of the Sharpe edge near the root. I'm happy with it.

May as well piggy back this thread instead of starting a new one.

97 ford hp60, used 3.54s from 79 Ford hp60.

All stock 97 bearings and shims. Looks good compared to the online pics. But just double checking.

Run the pinion with a drill. That is the best way to get a good print and will leave a ghost pattern on the non painted teeth. Also thin the compound with a little gear oil.

Used gears are tricky. I usually try and run a pattern on the gears before swapping them.

Coast side shows a touch deep. I’d pull 3-4 thou off the pinion stack and leave the carrier shims alone and that will loosen up the backlash just a touch.

I'll have a dial indicator to check it in the morning. Going by feel, I'd think the backlash is on the loose side if anything, but I guess I'll just have to see.

Does look a scosche deep.

Being used and no before pattern ran to match, don't be surprised if you have some noise. Probably won't be much tho, those don't look that bad.

Ran it with an impact, got a better pattern I think.

I need to figure out a way to clamp the pinion to the leaf or something to bet a decent backlash reading.

Drive side is pretty mint for used gears. Coast looks a touch shallow, that would be one I’d toss a coin on sealing up and running it.
