Setting up used front gears.

Came out of an 99-04

Going into a 05+

5.38s

Set up with the original 4.10 shim under the pinion head. (orig gears from the 05+ housing.)

Backlash right now 8-10 thou.

Should I add or remove shim under pinion head?

Shaved 5.38s for Dana 60 front.

Thanks for any advice.

no expert here. but to me that pattern looks pretty ok, especially for used gears. you could try changing the pinion shims. not sure how much better you will get. that looks like a lot of the "Acceptable" patterns you see in books/online. again. just my .02

We ended up taking 10 thou out from under the pinion head. And it looks better ended with 7 thou BL. It's a front so she'll fly.

Honestly those patterns aren't bad, especially for used gears. The concave side shows a little deep, but the convex side shows pretty balanced pinion depth. If you pulled .010 out after these pics, I would guess it's a decent bit shallow now

No surprisingly drive side stayed pretty much the same just further toward the the outside. The coast side came up and got rid of the Sharpe edge near the root. I'm happy with it.
