Any experience with them good or bad? The roofer we may hire uses them but I have read some not so good stuff online.

Id look into malarkey. I dont see much GAF at our suppliers, but i see GAF at home depot. Nothing more than an observation though as i have no first hand experience with GAF shingles. Malarkey is pretty common and good shingle brand

We used GAF on a garage we built for a friend several years ago and they seem to be holding up well. The ones on my 5 year old roof are something that starts with an "A" but I don't remember off the top of my head what the name was. They seem to be doing well, none ripped off in the wind storms we've had lately. I don't think I will ever go with a black roof again though.

My 30year roof is 20, and looks to be getting a warranty call soon...

We use them, they're pretty similar to any other higher end shingle. I'd put them on my house

I put GAF/ELK Timberline on my last house and just put OwensCorning Duration shingles on this house. It was between GAF/ELK and Owens Corning, both were comparable but the OC came out on top. Total system for the warranty: Ice and water shield on eves and valleys, drip edge, synthetic underlayment (Not tar paper), ridge vent, etc. No no old flashings or aprons are used, even if they are nailed in place under the siding they will put new metal over the top. 50 year warranty by OC and transferable for $75. Time will tell how they hold up but the look nice.

Stay away from Certainteed. French owned, Chinese made.

they are roof shingles
the come in many lines
15 year to 30 year yo a lifetime
no different then any other brand.
just pick yhe level you can afford.

My product is indeed gaf,
as you posted, (but smart of you to verrify)
purty much ANYTHING home depot stocks is bargain basement manufacturing (for pricepoint).
ask about an up charge to a better brand.
also ask around for the local roofing supply vendor, see what they say is best selling for quality.

Thats my take as well. None of our suplliers carry gaf shingles, so most reputable installers dont use gaf around here. Either way the install is important either brand...not that shingling is hard but there are many craigslist hacks that can waste your time and money.

plenty of good experience posted, and i have not used gaf. That said i wouldnt spend my money on GAF...i would try https://www.malarkeyroofing.com/

Depends on where you live. And installation is key to that as well. And what you want to spend.

Moss, mold/algae....hail ....snow load... .scorching heat.....tree cover and type, or lack of it. Where you live and it's conditions is the biggest factor for choice and cost.

GAF has been around the longest iirc, Duration shingles were manufactured for crackheads to install.... Spent a lot of time training in panther hall in toledo.

The higher dollar lines will get you better impact resistance and overall life..

East side...Gaf is usually best deal...west side maybe look at the malarkey.

The reason most local suppliers no longer carry gaf is because of lowes and home depot. Strictly volume.

Take a look at the class action lawsuit they lost in 2013. It was for shingles munufactured from 1999-2007 maybe yours are included.

Not much difference between any shingle brand...more of it comes down to installation and somewhat supporting products (better underlays, ice/water shield, etc.). Just get whatever 50+ year or lifetime version, don't go 3 tab (they always curl the corners), and you're good to go.

Hmmm...
thanx bud

Bought the popstand new in 99, was up there, already seeing glass in the 3 tab in norcal's gaybay area.
So a rather temperate climate, cleaned x3 a year.

I learned their problem shingles were made in Mobile Alabama, that plant has since closed. GAF built at least one new plant(they have 2)

I put GAF architectural shingles on the house this summer as that's what the local lumber yard sells. Seamed like any other shingle I have installed and handled. House previously had 3 tabs and they made it about 10 years so I guess I'll update this in 10 years with my experience.
