What's new

Future of KOH 4400 chassis/car development?

I expected it to slow him down more, from the sounds of it Wayes did too.

He was also running rock trails with no traffic. He would have had a hard time making a pass like Gomez or Chaney did around Rodd and Schererer.

Not any more but I bet it comes back around

It better!

Watching the difference in performance climbing backdoor was always a highlight. Either driving skill or winching skill. But the good driver/codog teams earned their times, and the bad ones floundered and deservedly lost time.

So all this talk about weight and size, let's get down to the biz of making things smaller and lighter.

Your biggest weight and size adders are the 40"+ tires, the engine/trans/t-case and the axles.

So the first step would be to drop tire size, that effects everything else.

Leading us to the question: Can 37" tires be competitive in the 4400 class at KOH?

Yeah, yeah, a golf cart crossed the line first on 37s blah, blah, blah.....

After some more thought, really all the other cars are just hoping for the top couple guys to have a bad day, heavy high power cars dominate until they break or flop

Yes - because see below. It works because it’s light and it’s scaled down proportionally to the tire size. The SXS itself is never really gonna cut it because they’re too fragile for this. But 3000 pounds 100 and change inch wheel base, 80 inches wide. Tons of travel. Probably can’t one shot back door but a lot of the trails it’ll blast through the stuff the 130 WB 100” wide cars have to belly over like a seal.

What else can be done to reduce solid axle unsprung weight? Different materials for housings, axle shafts, or knuckles? Better designed trusses? Full fab axle housings instead of tube? Less power? Smaller tires? Smarter drivers? TTB?

According to the latest Sema show research, bluetooth driveshafts and axleshafts are the future

single seat, utv front end, turbo'd 4cyl, auto trans, toyota rear end, 32 gals of fuel, fancy tensors class 10 tires for lap one, stickies for 2&3.

Done a while back too

350hp out of the 1000cc engine.

Is anyone running aluminum 3rds on the 9/10" fabbed housings with a good skid (GearWorks and other people make them, though they'd be easy enough to fab yourself) and having them survive something as taxing as KOH? It wouldn't save a ton of weight but pretty significant compared to the nodular iron ones.

Basically that's the case for any form of organized racing when you aren't one of the Top 5-10 people though.
true, i guess that SXS did get 5th when it was broken

someone needs to build something and figure this out:flipoff2:

His hair isn't nearly glorious enough to be me :flipoff2:

I can't wait to see what the next generation of U4 cars look like. Fair points are being made that big cars are still doing just fine, but I believe we're at the end of the era of cars getting bigger and bigger. It will be cool to see the innovation that hopefully comes along with that

Biggest problem with aluminum 3rds would be flexing of the ring and pinion in the case.

Better through bolt the main caps through the housing.

Which UTVs have a driveshaft running to the rear diff that could be run to a rear solid axle?

Honda Talon does, but I'm not sure if anyone is above 200hp with that powertrain.

I haven't looked under a Maverick R or Pro R.

So far we've got the tires settled on 37s.

Next up engine.... Which one?

Inline 4 to keep things small and tight or a V-6?

  • Gotta hold up to 6 hours of hell.
  • How much power?
