Its so you don't burn em up in the first 50 miles before you get oil down the tubes. Even semi float oil bath bearings come greased like timken set 10/ set 20.

Click to expand... I greased mine at initial install. Plenty of Dana 44s pre 70s used greased rear bearings. Before they removed the seals in the tubes. Greased only just needs more maintenance that's all. Guess it's whatever the engineer decides on the day. Japs still use that closed knuckle design too...
