A week ago, my buddy Dook had a golf-ball sized growth removed from under his tongue.

The vet got back to me today with the lab results- bone cancer. Maybe 2 months to go.

If they excised half of his mandible and did chemo and radiation, maybe a year. I'm not going to put him through that.

He's 12. I guess I need to dig a hole before frost. And I won't need to worry about refilling his joint pain pills.

:frown: :mad2: :bawling:

Man I'm so sorry to hear. These next few months are going to be tough. Cancer got mine as well, but I was only given an hour to say goodbye. I don't know what I would have done with 2 months.

A friend of mine was in your position and said he wished he got a new puppy before his old girl passed. I've always had multiple dogs so the thought of coming home to an empty house is unbearable.

He's a fantastic low-key, obedient, loving dog, so I was thinking a younger mutt could learn a few things, but I got a flat veto from my wife. Too much stress already to add another...

A while back I set my plate full of hamburger down on the coffee table next to him and went back to the kitchen for a drink. I guess with some dogs that would be an invitation, but Dook didn't even think about it.

I'm in the same situation. 16 year old beagle, cancer, heart issues and just got over her second bought with old dog vestibular syndrome. She leans a little left now but still seems happy. Sorry to hear it.

Sorry to hear. We've lost a couple of our dogs in the last few years to cancer. Our neighbor just lost theirs to cancer also. :frown:

We lost our Pug last year. Had a collapsed trachea and kept gasping for air. Worst day of my life. I'm still reeling in from it.

Its tough man. One of the few things that bring me to tears. :frown:

Sorry for you and the doggo. Lost my favorite dog of all time to cancer. Never lamented harder that I wish our critters could communicate with us. We rarely catch canine cancer soon enough to do something about it because they don’t tell us they don’t feel good. Looks like he had a good love filled life.

Fuck cancer in general. Good people and dogs shouldn't have to go through any of that... My old man has stage 4 prostate cancer that is in his bones now. It is absolutely relentless. Give your doggo a good pat on the head and scratch behind the ears for me.

sorry to hear that. We are in a similar situation, we thought our 6 yr old Aussie Cattle dog had a bacterial infection of the liver, but she isn't improving like expected and they are leaning towards liver cancer instead. it sucks. I think the worst part is not being able to explain to them why they feel shitty.

Sorry dude.. been there a few times now, it never gets any easier. Lost my buddy Rolo (avatar) just about a year ago now, the Mrs took it hard so i found a new member of the family a few weeks later. Some may like to wait longer but it did help to heal... but not replace.

Whoops, avatar is the new pup coming home..

Fuck. Fuck Cancer. We lost our Aussie last August to cancer on her liver. We had been dealing with some issues and they finally got a good look at it one trip and ruled it cancerous. Put her down right then and there. It was my Fiancee's dog and it tore her to pieces. Spoil the shit out of him and give him the best few days left he can have!

I got the last decade of friendship and love on credit, and now the bill is due in full.

That's how it works with every pet, though.

Been through it a bunch of times (we always had 4-5 dogs when I was growing up), never gets easier. You're doing the right thing by not dragging it out and making him suffer, even if it doesn't feel that way.

Update. Sept 1st was it. The tumor got to where he couldn't eat even soft food with help.

My wife climbed down in the hole to get the last bit. 5.5' should be good.

We took him for a walk at the dog park, then brought him home for salmon and french fries (that I had to mash).

The vet made a housecall and we all said goodbye while he nodded off in the sunshine...
