This is not a pleasure trip, but need to drive a motor home from Forth Worth, TX to Northern CA this weekend. I figure I'll only be good for 8 hours a day of driving a motorhome, so we'll probably take four days to do it. I am not sure what route to take this time of the year to avoid snow. I'll obviously check the weather the morning before I leave, but what areas should I be checking weather at?

Also, we have no idea where we are going to stay each night. It may be a RV park (I know nothing about them or how to find one on a route), or a Walmart parking lot. Does anyone know any good spots about 8-9 hours apart on the route to stay in an RV?

Not sure about your route specifically, but I just drove a used class A from Newport beach, CA to Wichita, KS with a buddy. 8 hours a day is tough without frequent stops and switching drivers up. We had good overnight luck in a casino parking lot and a quiet truck stop. We had heard that Walmarts were not as friendly as they used to be.

Either way, good luck and safe travels.

Oof, that would have been too much in this rig. We were fighting some good wind and some sloppy steering, but even without those two factors it just seemed taxing.

I can drive 10 to 14 no problem in my burb, but that class a was another beast entirely.

I'd be taking 40 all the way to barstow then up 5 or 99. Google says 1 day and 2 hrs, not sure why you need 4 days if it's not for pleasure.

It's a motorhome. Drive in shifts, sleep in the back. Start with a 10hr shift, then do a 6hr shift, then a 4, then a 2, as you get more fatigued the shorter shifts will help even if they result in less sleep.

Motor home.

I'd stay at rest stops along the way.

The high desert and Flagg Staff are gonna be your worst weather.

And 4 days is stretching it out a bit. 3 days max...Hell it's a 30 hour drive from the Missouri house to the Lake County house. Doesn't matter if I take 80 or 40.

I think you're overthinking this:flipoff2:

I would take the most southern route if you're worried about snow then.

I mostly mapped it out because I wanted to see the time frame.

Figured I might as well share it since it was up.

If no rest stops, pick a wide offramp. You won't need hookups or any of that jazz.

There is also no reason to run the generator while driving fwiw, I'm still not sure why people do it, but tons of them do

Edit fwiw, I'm planning a similar 30 hour trip in March to mid TX and I'll be going 5 south all the way down to the southern route to avoid a bunch of weather hopefully. Biggest slowdown will be me in the pickup with a meager 20 gal fuel tank, planning on 4 days of suck for it

1st day. Grants/Gallup NM
2nd day. Barstow/Tehachepi/Bakersfield Ca
3rd dat. Destination. Home free

What’s your concerns with snow?

287 to i40 should be fine. There are a few NM members for when NM claims another victim.

Didn't read all of the relpys, but here is my $0.02:

First, don't be a pussy. You said this isn't a pleasure trip, therefore you know it's gonna be hard. Hard times call for hard people. You can do way more than 8 hours driving per day, unless you are a pussy.

Second, Wlamart is actually a great place to stay, but you gotta make sure there is one in range once your pussy ass gets too tired.

Third, I did a drive through Texas in a motorome a year ago. If that trip was normal, don't plan on finding any open spaces in rest areas or truck stops at night. Try to sleep in the off hours if you can.

Third, you can do that drive in two days if you have a co-dawg.

287 to Amarillo is cake. 40 to Abq is also easy. Hell there's only like 3 big hills the whole way.

In the small towns along the way, DO NOT SPEED. If wind is a factor (its been windy as fawk the last couple of days), get in behind a semi and cruise.

You can also run 20 out to Rosco and pick up 84 through Lubbock to Clovis, then 60 to Melrose to 84 to Santa Rosa then 40 W. Less small towns to go through so less slowing down and stopping.

Also dont be a punk mf'er who parks their motorhome in a truck stop. Parking for us is slim as is :flipoff2:.

Walmart loves rv'ers though
