I have a chance to buy my ex. father in laws 05 Extra cab , F 250 Super duty 6.0 32,000 original miles , long story a good guy , TRW design enginer , hunter fisher , had a stroke 8 years ago and is been parked in a carport since, it was rarely used as he had cheaper cars to drive around town and was a cheap basterd . he realy only used it when he had truck stuff to do and kept on the
I have a chance at ex father in laws 2005 Super duty ex cab long bed 2 WD with a 6.0 , i might need another truck in the next 2 years and know the motors have had big problems ( i have an 05 6.0 myself ) i have spent close to 14 K $ on my motor the rest of the truck has been 100% problem free. but i know if i get it that i would put it in a highly rated local shop that i already use and have them bullet proof the motor for 8 k ? i know mine is after years of running shitty is running better then ever so i know in the right hands it can be done the motor has a legit 32 K on the odometer . i cant see ever owning a new truck at my age and having to spend 80 to 100 k on a new shit box.

SO WOULD YOU ?

If it was real cheap and you're always within AAA distance of home, maybe. They're marginally reliable with a mild/stock power level tune and head studs but the high pressure oil system will always be waiting to fail and there's no bulletproofing for that.

If you can throw the cash down to do the work then yeah it would be a good truck. The 6.0s are not a mystery time bomb they used to be with their flaws well known and good fixes in place for them. Like all diesels previous maintenance is key for the fuel system and a low mile truck thats been sitting may have more moisture issues with the injectors than one driven regularly.

I was looking for an 05-07 last year because the 6.4s really are a throw away motor and anything newer is too expensive. But knew there was $3-5k of bulletproofing that I'd have to do addressing EGR, head studs, etc..

We've had about every known failure you can have with a with a 6.0 on my dad's 03. It's still the only engine I'm considering for a diesel puller for the same reasons as cchambers.

Head studs, o-ring the heads, use a quality EGR delete system. The HPOP system problems mentioned by TrikeKid were mostly solved in the 05-07 model years with component material changes and a few other design differences. If you're willing to put in the work, it'll be a good engine to you, and it'll run absolute circles around anything older (7.3s, etc.)

I love me a 6.0. I daily a 2016 Ford 6.7 but still miss my 05 6.0 Excursion. Still have an 07 6.0 "farm" truck. They are so fun toi drive and have over 500k combined on both of mine with very minor issues. I've considered selling my 6.7 since I bought it before prices went nuts & getting another 6.0 but like the creature comforts too much, lol........
